How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Medical Equipment Technician
Confirm STEM OPT eligibility before you apply
Medical Equipment Technician roles typically fall under CIP codes tied to biomedical or electrical engineering. Verify your degree's CIP code with your DSO before applying so you can accurately represent your 36-month authorization window to employers.
Target employers with existing OPT infrastructure
Hospitals, medical device manufacturers, and large healthcare systems hire technicians regularly and often have HR processes for OPT workers. Smaller independent service organizations may be unfamiliar with OPT, so prepare a one-page explainer of your authorization timeline.
Lead with hands-on technical certifications
CBET or CABT certifications from AAMI signal readiness to employers who may be uncertain about OPT. Completing one of these during OPT strengthens your profile and reduces the perceived risk of sponsoring an international candidate long-term.
Align your application timeline with your OPT start date
Apply two to three months before your OPT authorization begins. Medical equipment technician hiring often involves background checks and credentialing that add weeks to onboarding, so starting early prevents a gap between your offer and your authorized start date.
Highlight field service and customer-facing experience
Employers in medical equipment roles value technicians who can communicate with clinical staff during installations or repairs. Emphasizing internship experience in hospital biomedical departments or device company field service teams makes your resume immediately relevant.
Understand your employer's H-1B sponsorship likelihood early
Before accepting an offer, ask whether the company has sponsored H-1B visas before. Biomedical technician roles can qualify as specialty occupations if the position requires a relevant engineering degree, but employer willingness varies considerably across healthcare organizations.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Medical Equipment Technician jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
They often do, but it depends on your degree's CIP code, not the job title itself. If your degree is in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related STEM field, you're likely eligible for the 24-month STEM extension, giving you up to 36 months total. Confirm eligibility with your DSO before applying, since some health science degrees don't qualify.
Can an F-1 OPT student work for a hospital biomedical department or only for device manufacturers?
Both are viable options for OPT students. Hospital biomedical engineering departments hire technicians directly, and so do third-party medical device service companies and original equipment manufacturers. The key requirement is that the work must be directly related to your field of study. Hospitals in large healthcare systems tend to have more established processes for onboarding OPT workers than smaller independent service organizations.
Where can I find Medical Equipment Technician jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT and international students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship and work authorization compatibility. Searching there saves significant time compared to manually screening postings that don't address OPT status. Many employers listed are familiar with OPT timelines and STEM extension requirements, which matters in a field where onboarding and credentialing take time.
Does a Medical Equipment Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it's not automatic. USCIS evaluates specialty occupation status based on whether the specific position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. Roles that primarily require on-the-job training rather than a specific engineering degree may not qualify. Positions that require a biomedical or electrical engineering background and involve complex troubleshooting or technical program management are stronger candidates for H-1B sponsorship.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my employer changes job sites or assigns me to a client location?
Your OPT authorization is tied to your employer of record, not the physical work location. If you're working through a staffing agency or your employer contracts you to work at a hospital or clinic, your DSO should be notified of any significant changes to your employment details. If you're on STEM OPT, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, which applies regardless of which client site you're placed at.
