Nurse Manager Jobs for OPT Students
Nurse Manager jobs on OPT require active RN licensure in your state and typically a BSN, which satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for STEM OPT extensions if your degree is in nursing. Most hospital systems sponsor H-1B after OPT, making this a strong long-term visa pathway.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Nurse Manager
Verify your RN license transfers across states
Many hospital systems hire Nurse Managers from out of state, but your RN license must be valid where the job is located. Compact license states simplify this, but non-compact states require a separate application that can take weeks.
Target hospital systems with established H-1B track records
Large health systems like HCA Healthcare, Ascension, and academic medical centers regularly sponsor nurses for H-1B visas. Prioritize employers with HR teams experienced in immigration paperwork, since smaller clinics often lack that infrastructure entirely.
Lead with clinical leadership experience, not just bedside hours
Nurse Manager roles require demonstrated team leadership, budgeting, and quality improvement experience. Highlight charge nurse rotations, staff scheduling responsibilities, and any performance improvement projects to compete with candidates who have formal management titles.
Clarify your OPT timeline before accepting an offer
Standard OPT gives you 12 months. If your nursing degree qualifies as STEM, confirm with your DSO before interviewing, since not all nursing programs appear on the STEM designation list. Your employer needs accurate authorization dates.
Ask HR explicitly about H-1B sponsorship during final rounds
Many hospitals sponsor H-1B but do not advertise it openly. Raise sponsorship in final-round conversations after demonstrating your value. Framing it as confirming a timeline, rather than asking for a favor, keeps the conversation professional and confident.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Nurse Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for OPT purposes?
Yes. Nurse Manager positions typically require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard used to justify H-1B sponsorship after OPT. Your DSO may also confirm whether your specific nursing degree qualifies for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to 36 months of total work authorization.
Can I work as a Nurse Manager on OPT without a U.S. nursing license?
No. Active RN licensure in the state where you work is a legal requirement for any nursing role, including management. Most employers will not extend an offer until licensure is confirmed. If your license is pending, be transparent with HR about your expected approval date so they can plan the start date accordingly.
How do I find Nurse Manager jobs where employers are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Nurse Manager roles posted by employers willing to hire OPT students. General job boards rarely filter by sponsorship willingness, so you end up applying to positions that screen out candidates requiring work authorization before the interview stage even begins.
What happens to my OPT authorization if I change hospital employers as a Nurse Manager?
OPT work authorization is tied to your field of study, not a specific employer, so you can change employers without losing your authorization as long as the new role is directly related to your nursing degree. Report the employer change to your DSO within 10 days and update your SEVIS record to stay in compliance.
Do hospital systems typically sponsor Nurse Managers for H-1B after OPT?
Many large hospital systems and academic medical centers do sponsor experienced Nurse Managers for H-1B, particularly when the candidate has proven leadership performance during OPT. Sponsorship is less common at smaller outpatient clinics or private practices that lack dedicated immigration HR support. Prioritizing larger health systems significantly increases your odds of a sponsored transition.
