Prosthetics Technician Jobs for OPT Students
Prosthetics Technician roles on OPT fall under STEM-eligible healthcare manufacturing codes, which means qualifying students may access up to 36 months of work authorization. Most positions require hands-on fabrication skills and a degree in orthotics, prosthetics, or a related biomedical field. Clinical and laboratory settings both hire OPT technicians regularly.

INTRODUCTION
This exciting opportunity will give you the chance to work first hand in fabricating a variety of orthotics and prosthetic devices. You will work closely with the Clinician and patients to help adjust and repair the devices by fabricating orthoses and their components. This work environment will be away from the exam room, typically in a small workshop. Since this role is focusing heavily on the fabrication process, hand skills and familiarity with hand tools is necessary. The ideal candidate will have experience with band saws, drill presses, vacuum systems, heat guns, blades, speed routers, and other small hand tools. This is a part time position of up to 24 hours a week.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Prosthetics Technician
Target certified prosthetics practices
ABC-accredited clinics and large orthotic-prosthetic networks like Hanger Clinic or Össur have established HR processes for work authorization. They hire technicians regularly and are more likely to understand OPT documentation requirements than small independent labs.
Confirm your STEM OPT eligibility early
Prosthetics Technician roles often qualify under STEM OPT if your degree is in biomedical engineering, orthotics and prosthetics, or a related field. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer to confirm the 24-month extension applies.
Emphasize fabrication credentials on your resume
Employers want technicians who can work with carbon fiber, thermoplastics, and CAD-CAM systems from day one. List any hands-on lab rotations, casting experience, or equipment certifications prominently. This reduces training time, which makes OPT timing concerns less of a barrier.
Start your employer conversation with the job, not the visa
Lead with your fabrication skills and clinical training during interviews. Once an offer is progressing, explain OPT clearly and briefly. Most prosthetics employers focus on bench competency first and find work authorization straightforward once they understand the process.
Apply well before your OPT start date
Prosthetics labs typically run small teams, so hiring timelines can be slow. Submit applications at least 90 days before your OPT authorization begins. This gives employers time to complete onboarding and gives you time to address any documentation questions without pressure.
Pursue ABC or BOC certification while on OPT
Sitting for American Board for Certification exams during your OPT period signals long-term commitment to the field. Employers view certified candidates as stronger H-1B sponsorship investments, improving your chances of transitioning to a longer-term visa after OPT ends.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Prosthetics Technician on OPT without a clinical license?
Yes. Prosthetics Technicians work in fabrication and laboratory settings rather than direct patient care, so clinical licensure is not typically required for the technician role itself. OPT authorizes you to work in your field of study, and most technician positions do not require you to hold a Certified Prosthetist credential. Confirm the specific job description with your employer to ensure the role aligns with your degree.
Does a Prosthetics Technician role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on your degree's CIP code. If your program falls under biomedical engineering, materials science, or an approved STEM designation, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to 36 months total. Prosthetics and orthotics programs accredited under biomedical fields often qualify. Check with your Designated School Official to confirm before applying for the extension through your DSO and USCIS.
Where can I find Prosthetics Technician jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is the best place to search for Prosthetics Technician roles filtered specifically for F-1 OPT students. The platform shows positions from employers who have sponsored or hired work-authorized candidates, saving you time filtering out roles that won't consider OPT. Searching there gives you a focused list relevant to your authorization status rather than sifting through general job postings.
What happens to my OPT if my Prosthetics Technician employer closes or loses their accreditation?
If your employer closes or you lose your position, OPT students have a 60-day unemployment grace period to find a new role before falling out of status. You must report the change to your DSO promptly. Use that window to apply aggressively to other prosthetics practices or orthotic labs. If you're on STEM OPT, the same 60-day rule applies, and your E-Verify employer reporting requirement resets with a new qualifying employer.
Can a small prosthetics lab sponsor me for an H-1B after my OPT ends?
Yes, but small practices face more administrative complexity than large healthcare networks. H-1B sponsorship requires filing a Labor Condition Application and an I-129 petition, and smaller employers may need outside legal counsel for the first time. Raising the topic early, ideally during your OPT period, gives the employer time to engage an immigration attorney and prepare for the H-1B lottery registration deadline each March.
