Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in CT Technologist
Get ARRT certified before your OPT starts
Most hospitals won't interview candidates without active ARRT (R)(CT) certification. Complete your registry exam during your final semester so you're job-ready on day one of OPT and don't burn authorization time waiting for credentials.
Check state licensure requirements early
Many states require a separate CT or radiologic technologist license beyond ARRT. Processing times range from two to eight weeks. Apply the moment your program ends to avoid a gap between your OPT start date and your legal ability to work.
Target hospitals with established visa sponsorship history
Large health systems and academic medical centers are far more likely to have immigration counsel on retainer and HR processes for sponsoring H-1B visa workers after OPT ends. Filter your search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with that track record.
Be explicit about your OPT timeline in applications
Hiring managers in healthcare want certainty. Stating your exact OPT end date and that you'll need H-1B sponsorship upfront filters out employers who won't sponsor and saves you from offers that lead nowhere close to the lottery deadline.
Prioritize roles at ACGME-affiliated teaching hospitals
Teaching hospitals are accustomed to international staff, tend to have structured sponsorship pipelines, and often have cap-exempt H-1B access through their affiliated university or research arms, giving you options outside the standard lottery.
Build your case around clinical volume and subspecialty experience
Employers sponsoring OPT workers want to justify the investment. Quantify your scan volume, list subspecialties you cover (cardiac, neuro, trauma), and document any cross-training. Stronger clinical profiles make sponsorship conversations easier to initiate.
CT Technologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a CT Technologist on OPT without ARRT certification?
No. Virtually every U.S. employer requires active ARRT (R)(CT) certification as a condition of employment, not just a preference. Many states also mandate a separate radiologic technologist license before you can legally operate imaging equipment. You need both credentials in hand before your OPT employment start date.
Is the CT Technologist role eligible for a STEM OPT extension?
No. CT Technology programs are classified under allied health and radiologic sciences, which are not on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Your OPT authorization is limited to 12 months. Planning for H-1B sponsorship well before your OPT expires is essential, as the lottery registration window opens each March for an October 1 start date.
Where can I find CT Technologist jobs that sponsor OPT and H-1B?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and surfaces CT Technologist roles at employers with a demonstrated sponsorship history. Filtering by sponsorship willingness saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that an employer won't support your visa transition.
Can I work at multiple imaging centers simultaneously on OPT?
Yes, OPT allows concurrent employment as long as each position is directly related to your field of study and each employer is reported to your DSO for SEVIS updates. Working per diem at a second imaging center is common for CT Techs and is fully permissible, provided both roles align with your authorized field.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my hospital goes through a merger or acquisition?
If your employer undergoes a merger or acquisition and your role and duties remain substantively the same, your OPT authorization generally continues without interruption. However, you must notify your DSO of the employer name change for SEVIS. If the role changes materially, report it promptly to confirm it still qualifies under your authorized field of study.
