How to Get Visa Sponsorship in P C Insurance
Target carriers with dedicated early-career programs
Large P&C insurers like Travelers, Chubb, and Liberty Mutual run structured rotational programs that regularly hire OPT students. These programs have HR infrastructure for work authorization and are far more likely to sponsor than smaller regional carriers.
Clarify whether your role qualifies for STEM OPT
Actuarial analyst, data scientist, and risk modeling roles often qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in a STEM-designated field. Confirm your program CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer.
Lead with your EAD timeline, not your visa status
When discussing authorization with hiring managers, frame it around your EAD expiration date and STEM extension eligibility. Concrete timelines are easier for employers to evaluate than abstract visa category names.
Pursue actuarial exam progress before interviewing
Passing one or two Society of Actuaries or CAS exams signals genuine commitment to the field and reduces employer hesitation about sponsorship investment. Candidates with exam credit are consistently prioritized in underwriting and actuarial pipelines.
Understand the E-Verify requirement before accepting an offer
P&C insurers are often federal contractors or operate under state regulations requiring E-Verify enrollment. Confirm your employer participates before signing, as OPT EAD authorization must be verified through the E-Verify system to remain compliant.
Ask specifically about H-1B sponsorship history during interviews
Request how many employees the company has sponsored in the past three years and whether they have dedicated immigration counsel. A company with recent sponsorship history is far more likely to follow through than one encountering the process for the first time.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students work in P&C insurance roles?
Yes. P&C insurance positions in underwriting, claims analysis, actuarial work, and risk management all qualify as professional employment under OPT, provided the role relates to your field of study. Your degree in finance, mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related discipline supports authorization. You must work at least 20 hours per week and report employment to your DSO within 10 days of starting.
Do P&C insurance jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Some do. Actuarial analyst, quantitative risk analyst, and data scientist roles within P&C insurance frequently qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension when the hiring employer is E-Verify enrolled and your degree carries a STEM-designated CIP code. Standard underwriting or claims adjuster roles may not qualify. Verify your specific degree classification with your DSO and confirm the employer's E-Verify status before applying for the extension.
How do I find P&C insurance employers that sponsor OPT and H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate lists P&C insurance roles from employers with documented sponsorship history, so you can filter specifically for companies that have sponsored OPT or H-1B workers before. This saves significant time compared to researching individual carriers manually. Large national insurers and reinsurers generally have established immigration pipelines, while smaller regional carriers may require more direct conversation about sponsorship willingness.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my P&C insurance employer changes or restructures?
If your employer is acquired, merges, or your position is eliminated, your OPT authorization is tied to your status as a student, not to a specific employer. You can change employers freely on standard OPT. However, you must report the change to your DSO and cannot have more than 90 days of unemployment during the OPT period. STEM OPT holders must update their Form I-983 training plan with the new employer within five days.
Are actuarial internships in P&C insurance valid OPT employment?
Yes, paid actuarial internships count as valid OPT employment provided the work is directly related to your field of study and you work at least 20 hours per week. Many P&C insurers convert actuarial interns to full-time roles and subsequently sponsor H-1B visas, making internships a practical entry point. Report the internship start date to your DSO and confirm the employer's E-Verify enrollment if you plan to apply for STEM OPT afterward.
