Pediatric Neurosurgeon Jobs for OPT Students
Pediatric neurosurgeon roles are among the most specialized positions in medicine, and most residency and fellowship programs actively sponsor OPT and H-1B visas. Your F-1 OPT gives you 12 months of work authorization, with STEM OPT extension unlikely to apply given the MD pathway.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Pediatric Neurosurgeon
Clarify your OPT timeline with HR early
Pediatric neurosurgery fellowships typically last one to two years. Confirm with the program coordinator that your OPT authorization window covers the full appointment period before signing any fellowship contract or accepting an offer.
Understand J-1 versus OPT for clinical training
Many fellowship programs default to J-1 exchange visitor status rather than OPT for international physicians. Ask explicitly whether the program supports OPT, since J-1 carries a two-year home residency requirement that affects your long-term immigration options.
Document your specialty occupation clearly
Pediatric neurosurgery clearly meets the specialty occupation standard for H-1B purposes, but your employer still needs a well-documented Labor Condition Application. Provide your fellowship completion certificate and board certification pathway documentation to the sponsoring institution's immigration counsel.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a pediatric neurosurgeon on F-1 OPT?
Yes, F-1 OPT authorizes you to work in a role directly related to your field of study, which for medical doctors means clinical or research positions aligned with your degree. Pediatric neurosurgery qualifies, provided you hold an MD or equivalent and your Employment Authorization Document is valid before you begin seeing patients.
Do pediatric neurosurgery programs typically sponsor OPT students?
Most accredited pediatric neurosurgery fellowship programs at children's hospitals and academic medical centers do sponsor international trainees, though many default to J-1 exchange visitor status rather than OPT. You should ask each program directly during the application cycle whether they support OPT authorization, since policies vary by institution and their legal counsel's familiarity with F-1 work authorization.
How do I find pediatric neurosurgeon jobs that sponsor OPT?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship willingness, making it easier to identify pediatric neurosurgery and physician roles at institutions open to OPT candidates. Searching on a general job board means manually vetting each employer's sponsorship policy, which is a significant time cost when you're navigating fellowship application deadlines simultaneously.
Does the STEM OPT extension apply to pediatric neurosurgeons?
No. The STEM OPT extension is available only to graduates of STEM-designated degree programs, and MD programs are not on the STEM Designated Degree Program list. Pediatric neurosurgeons on F-1 OPT have 12 months of post-completion authorization. Planning your H-1B petition or J-1 transition before that window closes is essential to maintaining continuous work authorization.
What happens to my OPT if my fellowship start date is delayed?
Your OPT clock runs from the start date on your EAD, regardless of whether you have begun working. If your fellowship start is delayed by credentialing or hospital onboarding, those weeks still count against your 12-month authorization. Contact your Designated School Official immediately if you anticipate a delayed start so they can advise on whether any status adjustments or bridging options are available.
