Target firms with established OPT hiring pipelines
Large consulting firms like Deloitte, Accenture, and Cognizant have structured OPT hiring programs. They understand STEM OPT extensions and H-1B visa sponsorship timelines, making them more predictable partners than smaller boutique firms without immigration infrastructure.
Align your degree field to the consulting practice area
USCIS evaluates whether your degree directly supports the role. A business analyst consulting in supply chain carries stronger specialty occupation standing than a generalist placement. Match your academic background to a specific practice area in your application materials.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship policy before accepting an offer
Some firms hire OPT workers but do not sponsor H-1B petitions after OPT expires. Ask HR directly during final-round interviews whether they have sponsored H-1B visas in the past two years and what that process looks like.
Prioritize client-facing roles with documented project deliverables
Professional Services Consultant positions with defined technical responsibilities, deliverables, and client billing codes are easier to support in an H-1B petition. Roles described only as generalist support carry more risk when USCIS reviews specialty occupation eligibility.
Track your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility early
Standard OPT lasts 12 months. STEM-eligible graduates can apply for a 24-month extension, but your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm E-Verify status before your OPT start date so you have time to plan your extension filing.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for OPT-friendly consulting roles
Migrate Mate surfaces Professional Services Consultant jobs from employers with active visa sponsorship histories. Filtering by sponsorship track record saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations after interviews.
Professional Services Consultant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Professional Services Consultant jobs qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B sponsorship?
Most do, but the specific job description matters. USCIS looks for roles requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field, such as information systems, business administration, or management. Generic consulting titles with vague duties face more scrutiny. Roles tied to a defined practice area, such as ERP implementation or IT service delivery, have a stronger specialty occupation record.
Can I work as a Professional Services Consultant on OPT without employer sponsorship?
Yes. During your OPT period, you're authorized to work for any employer in a role related to your degree without needing the employer to file anything on your behalf. Sponsorship only becomes relevant if you want to stay beyond OPT. That said, it's worth identifying employers willing to sponsor early, since H-1B cap registration opens in March each year.
What degrees support a Professional Services Consultant OPT application?
Business administration, management information systems, computer science, industrial engineering, and supply chain management are the most common qualifying degree fields. The connection between your degree and the consulting role needs to be clear in how the position is described. A degree in a loosely related field, such as communications, may not satisfy the specialty occupation threshold if the role requires technical depth.
Are consulting firms generally willing to sponsor H-1B visas after OPT?
Larger firms with dedicated immigration teams, including major IT and management consulting companies, have well-established H-1B sponsorship programs. Smaller firms vary significantly. The best way to assess a firm's track record is to ask directly during the hiring process and check how many H-1B petitions they have filed recently. Migrate Mate filters for employers with verified sponsorship histories, which makes this research faster.
Does consulting on a client site affect my OPT authorization?
No. OPT authorizes you to work for your direct employer regardless of where the work is performed, including at a client's location. The key requirement is that your employer of record, the firm paying your salary and issuing your W-2, is the entity listed on your EAD. Third-party staffing arrangements where the billing employer differs from your visa-sponsoring employer can create complications for future H-1B petitions and should be reviewed carefully.
