Target companies with established H-1B sponsorship track records
Mid-size and enterprise tech companies sponsor Scrum Masters for H-1B visa far more consistently than startups. Look for employers who have filed H-1B petitions for project management or agile coaching roles in prior years before accepting an offer.
Confirm your role qualifies as a STEM OPT job
Scrum Master positions qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension when the role is directly tied to a technical product team. Verify your job offer letter describes responsibilities involving software development lifecycle management, not just general office coordination.
Get certified before you apply
Hiring managers treat CSM or PSM I certification as a baseline filter for Scrum Master roles. Earning certification before your job search removes a common early-screen rejection reason and signals you are ready to contribute immediately without additional training overhead.
Address your OPT timeline proactively with recruiters
Bring up your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility during the recruiter screening call, not after an offer. Employers who sponsor visas prefer candidates who understand their own timeline and can clearly explain the H-1B process without requiring a crash course.
Prioritize roles embedded in engineering or product teams
Scrum Masters working directly inside software engineering or product development teams are more defensible for specialty occupation classification, which matters for future H-1B petitions. Avoid roles where agile facilitation is peripheral to a non-technical business unit.
Leverage your technical degree when pitching yourself
Many Scrum Master candidates come from non-technical backgrounds. If your degree is in computer science, information systems, or engineering, lead with that. Employers sponsoring H-1B visas need to establish a degree requirement, and your background strengthens that case significantly.
Scrum Master OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Scrum Master jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
They can, but it depends on how the role is classified. If your Scrum Master position is tied to a technical team working on software or engineering products and your degree is in a STEM field, DSOs generally approve the STEM OPT extension. Roles focused purely on non-technical business process management are a harder case. Confirm the classification with your DSO before accepting an offer.
How do I find Scrum Master employers who sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters job listings by visa sponsorship willingness, so you are not wasting applications on employers who will not consider OPT workers. Search for Scrum Master roles there to find companies that have already indicated they are open to sponsoring international candidates at various stages of the OPT and H-1B process.
Can I work as a Scrum Master on day-one OPT before my STEM extension is approved?
Yes. Your initial 12-month OPT EAD authorizes full-time employment as a Scrum Master as soon as it is valid. You do not need to wait for a STEM extension approval to start working. Apply for the STEM extension at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires so there is no gap in your work authorization while the extension is pending.
Will my computer science or engineering degree support a Scrum Master H-1B petition?
It strengthens the case but does not guarantee approval. USCIS evaluates whether the specific job requires a degree in a directly related field as a minimum requirement. Scrum Master roles tied to software development teams, with responsibilities like sprint planning, technical backlog refinement, and engineering team facilitation, are more likely to meet the specialty occupation standard than generalist project coordination roles.
What certifications matter most for Scrum Master OPT job applications?
The CSM (Certified ScrumMaster) from Scrum Alliance and PSM I (Professional Scrum Master) from Scrum.org are the two most recognized credentials. Either signals baseline competency to hiring managers. For roles in larger enterprises or regulated industries, a PMI-ACP or SAFe Agilist certification can differentiate you. Certification also helps demonstrate your professional development during OPT, which supports your employer's reporting requirements.
