Target employers with established OPT hiring pipelines
Large logistics, tech, and healthcare companies hire Service Operations Managers on OPT regularly. Focus on organizations with dedicated international hiring processes, as they understand EAD timelines and are less likely to withdraw offers due to work authorization questions.
Lead with your specialty occupation credentials
Service Operations Manager roles typically require a bachelor's degree in a specific field, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard. Emphasize your degree field and how it directly informs your operations approach to strengthen your visa eligibility case with employers.
Apply before your OPT start date, not after
Most hiring timelines run six to ten weeks. Starting your search two to three months before your OPT authorization begins gives employers enough runway to complete interviews and onboarding without treating your work authorization as a liability or a timeline problem.
Address STEM OPT extension eligibility upfront
If your degree is in industrial engineering, information systems, or a related STEM field, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Mentioning this during the offer stage signals to employers that they have more time before needing to pursue H-1B visa sponsorship.
Frame your experience around measurable operational outcomes
Hiring managers for operations roles prioritize candidates who can demonstrate process improvements, cost reductions, or efficiency gains with real numbers. Quantified results shift the conversation away from visa status and toward the business value you bring to the team.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship history, not just willingness
Many employers say they are open to sponsorship but have never actually filed an H-1B petition. Ask how many employees they have sponsored in the past three years. A company with a track record is far more reliable than one making a first-time commitment.
Service Operations Manager OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Service Operations Manager on F-1 OPT?
Yes. Service Operations Manager roles generally qualify as specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business administration, industrial engineering, or supply chain management. Your EAD card authorizes full-time employment in this role during your OPT period, whether pre-completion or post-completion OPT.
Do Service Operations Manager roles qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If your bachelor's or master's degree is in a STEM-designated field such as industrial engineering, information systems, or operations research, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. The employer also needs to be enrolled in E-Verify. Check your degree's CIP code with your DSO to confirm eligibility.
How do I find Service Operations Manager jobs that sponsor OPT and H-1B?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to OPT and visa sponsorship, which removes the guesswork of screening hundreds of postings manually. For Service Operations Manager roles, focus on companies in logistics, SaaS, healthcare operations, and manufacturing, as these sectors file H-1B petitions for operations professionals at higher rates than most.
Will employers see my OPT status as a hiring risk for this role?
Some will, but it is largely a function of employer size and sector. Large companies with HR infrastructure treat OPT as a standard hiring scenario. Smaller firms may hesitate if they lack experience with international candidates. Addressing your STEM extension eligibility and the straightforward path to H-1B sponsorship early in conversations reduces perceived risk significantly.
What happens to my Service Operations Manager job if my OPT expires before H-1B approval?
If your employer files your H-1B petition before your OPT expires and USCIS receives it by April 1 for the October 1 start date, you are covered by cap-gap protection, which automatically extends your work authorization. Your employment as a Service Operations Manager can continue uninterrupted through the cap-gap period as long as the petition remains pending or approved.
