OPT Strategy Jobs
Strategy roles on OPT span corporate strategy, management consulting, and business development. Most positions qualify as specialty occupations under F-1 OPT work authorization, and many employers in consulting and tech actively sponsor H-1B visa afterward. Your 12-month OPT clock starts on your employment start date, so targeting firms with strong sponsorship track records early matters.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Strategy
Target firms with STEM-adjacent strategy roles
Strategy roles at tech companies, analytics firms, and data-driven consultancies often sit under STEM-designated departments. That can qualify you for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you 36 months total to secure sponsorship.
Prioritize employers with H-1B sponsorship history
Not all strategy employers sponsor visas. Before applying, verify whether the firm has a track record of sponsoring H-1B visa petitions for strategy roles. Consulting firms at the Big 3 and major tech companies sponsor at high rates.
Frame your authorization window proactively
Bring up OPT early in the process, not at the offer stage. Telling a hiring manager you have 12 to 36 months of authorization upfront prevents late-stage surprises and positions sponsorship as a structured next step.
Align your degree field to the strategy role description
OPT work must be directly related to your major. A business analytics or finance degree maps cleanly to most strategy roles. If your degree is less obvious, prepare a clear explanation of how your coursework connects to the position.
Report your employer within 10 days of starting
Once you accept a strategy offer, report your employer and start date to your DSO within 10 days. Delays in updating your SEVIS record can jeopardize your OPT authorization, even if your EAD card is already in hand.
Track your unemployment days carefully
OPT allows a maximum of 90 unemployment days. Strategy job searches can run long, especially at senior levels. Start your search well before graduation so you have buffer time without burning through your authorized unemployment window.
Strategy OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do strategy roles qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on the employer and how the role is classified. Strategy positions at tech companies, consulting firms with analytics practices, or roles tied to a STEM-designated CIP code can qualify. The key is that your employer must be E-Verify enrolled and the role must fall under a qualifying STEM occupation code. Confirm this with your DSO before accepting an offer.
How do I find strategy employers who sponsor OPT and H-1B?
Migrate Mate filters strategy jobs by employers with active OPT sponsorship and H-1B sponsorship history, so you're not applying blind. Look for firms in management consulting, corporate strategy at large tech companies, and private equity-backed portfolio companies, which tend to have established immigration pipelines and dedicated HR processes for visa sponsorship.
Can I do strategy consulting work as an independent contractor on OPT?
Generally no. OPT regulations require that your work be for an employer, not self-employment or independent contracting. If you're placed at a client site through a staffing agency, that can be permissible, but the agency must be your legal employer of record. Freelance or project-based consulting arrangements without a formal employer relationship risk violating your OPT terms.
What happens to my OPT if my strategy role gets eliminated or my contract ends?
Your 90-day unemployment clock starts the day your employment ends. You can continue your job search within that window. If you find a new qualifying strategy role, report it to your DSO and your unemployment days stop accumulating. Exceeding 90 days terminates your OPT status, so it's important to start searching immediately and keep your DSO informed throughout.
Do I need a new EAD card if I change strategy employers on OPT?
No. Your EAD card remains valid for the duration of your OPT authorization period, regardless of how many employers you work for. When you change employers, you simply report the new employer information to your DSO within 10 days. The new employer verifies your existing EAD through Form I-9. No new card or USCIS filing is required for the employer change itself.
