The opportunity
Kin is expanding the ways we help homeowners take control of the financial side of homeownership. Property taxes are one of the largest and least understood expenses homeowners face, and many miss opportunities to challenge inaccurate property assessments.
We’re building solutions designed to help homeowners better understand and navigate the property tax appeals process. To support this effort, we’re seeking a Property Tax Appeals Consultant to bring deep subject matter expertise to our Product team and support our customers as we develop this capability.
In this role, you will help us translate the complexities of the Texas or Georgia property tax system—including regulatory requirements, county-level processes, and filing procedures—into practical insights and savings opportunities for our customers.
Your responsibilities
- Conduct informal appraisals, examining and evaluating residential and commercial properties, to establish market values
- Advise on Texas property tax protest regulations and compliance considerations relevant to developing a homeowner-facing solution
- Provide insight into county appraisal district practices and procedural differences across major state counties
- Explain protest submission workflows, including required documentation, filing timelines, and submission methods used across counties
- Share expertise on hearing preparation and protest strategy, including common expectations and best practices
- Help identify operational requirements and potential risks associated with launching a property tax protest support product
- Act as a trusted advisor during product design discussions, ensuring regulatory accuracy and operational feasibility
What you’ll bring
- 2+ years of experience working within the Texas or Georgia property tax protest and appeals process, including preparing filings and understanding how protests move through appraisal districts and review boards
- Strong familiarity with county-specific procedures, timelines, and filing requirements, particularly across major Texas counties
- Experience participating in or advising on property tax protest filings and appraisal review board hearings
- The ability to translate complex regulatory frameworks into clear, practical guidance for cross-functional teams, including product, operations, and technology partners and for customers
- A mindset that balances innovation with compliance, helping us find better ways to support homeowners while staying aligned with regulatory requirements
- Comfort working with early-stage initiatives where processes, tools, and products are still evolving
- Senior Property Tax Consultant License
Kin will accept applications for this role until March 31, 2026.
How we work
We don’t just hire for skills. We hire for alignment. Kinfolk bring diverse perspectives, but we’re united by a shared set of values that shape how we work and how we show up for each other and our customers.
Run through walls, together - Our industry is stuck in the status quo. But Kin is different. We are challengers. Innovators unwavering in our mission to fix insurance for those who need it most. We are changing insurance for good. We roll up our sleeves, take action, and get “impossible” things done every day with grit and teamwork.
Raise the bar. Drop the ego - Attitudes are contagious. Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. Like professional sports teams, we win by working in sync. We show up, work hard, and play to each other’s strengths.
Act like an owner - We are owners, fully accountable for achieving Kin’s mission. That requires positive, proactive, big-picture thinking well beyond our job descriptions. Ask questions, take ownership. Do the right thing, even when it’s hard. Because when Kin thrives, so do you. And so do our customers.
Operate lean. Deliver more - We build efficiency into everything we do. Each dollar we save gets reinvested to deliver more to our customers: better pricing, more products, and new innovations. We work smarter by relentlessly prioritizing and using technology, including AI, to multiply our impact. Lean is about focus, not deprivation. Lean isn't a limitation – it's our competitive advantage.
Keep asking ‘What if?’ - We value curiosity. To make insurance better for our customers, we experiment. We embrace insights. And we base decisions on data rather than assumptions. We see setbacks as opportunities for growth and are always learning and improving. Both individually and as a company.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Tax Consultant
Highlight your CPA exam progress on every application
Passing one or more CPA exam sections signals commitment to licensure, which matters to hiring managers evaluating OPT candidates. Even partial progress sets you apart from applicants who haven't started the credentialing process.
Time your OPT start date strategically around tax season
Most tax consulting roles ramp up between January and April. Aligning your OPT authorization start date with this window maximizes your value to employers and improves your chances of securing a full-time offer.
Clarify your work authorization upfront, not after an offer
Tax consulting firms move quickly during hiring season. Disclosing your OPT status and end date early avoids last-minute complications and demonstrates the transparency that compliance-focused employers in this field expect.
Build technical skills in tax software that firms actually use
Proficiency in platforms like Thomson Reuters UltraTax or CCH Axcess is a concrete differentiator. Firms evaluating OPT candidates weigh technical readiness heavily, since onboarding time is compressed when work authorization windows are limited.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Tax Consultant roles qualify as specialty occupations for OPT and H-1B purposes?
Yes. Tax Consultant positions typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance, or a related field, which meets the specialty occupation standard. This makes them well-suited for OPT work authorization and positions you for H-1B sponsorship. Roles at CPA firms and corporate tax departments have a strong track record of successful H-1B approvals.
How long can I work as a Tax Consultant on OPT?
Standard OPT provides 12 months of work authorization after graduation. If your degree falls under a qualifying STEM classification, you may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to 36 months total. Many accounting and finance programs qualify, but confirm your specific degree's STEM eligibility with your Designated School Official before planning around the extension.
Where can I find Tax Consultant jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters job listings by sponsorship willingness, so you're not wasting applications on roles that won't consider your work authorization status. Browsing Tax Consultant roles on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have hired OPT candidates before, which is the clearest proxy for sponsorship likelihood.
Can I work in tax consulting during my OPT if I'm still waiting on my EAD card?
No. You cannot begin working until you have your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) in hand, even if your OPT start date has passed. USCIS recommends applying at least 90 days before your intended start date. Coordinate your job offer timeline accordingly and communicate your EAD receipt date to your employer as soon as it arrives.
Does passing the CPA exam improve my chances of H-1B sponsorship as an OPT student?
It doesn't directly affect H-1B eligibility, but CPA progress matters practically. Firms that sponsor H-1B visas for tax staff prefer candidates investing in long-term licensure, since CPA-track employees are more likely to be retained through the multi-year sponsorship process. Partial exam completion is worth listing on your resume and discussing in interviews.
