Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Workday Consultant
Target implementation partners over end-user companies
Consulting firms like Deloitte, Accenture, and IBM sponsor OPT students regularly and process high volumes of H-1B visa petitions. Their familiarity with work authorization makes the conversation easier than with companies that sponsor once every few years.
Confirm your degree qualifies for the STEM extension
Workday Consultant roles typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related STEM field. Confirming this early gives employers more runway and often improves your candidacy.
Highlight Workday certification on your resume
Workday certifications in HCM, Financials, or Integrations signal job-ready skills and reduce employer training costs. Certified candidates on OPT are a stronger business case for sponsorship because the company's investment in you is already partially realized.
Address OPT timing proactively in interviews
Bring up your OPT status before an offer is extended, not after. Explain your current authorization end date, whether a STEM extension applies, and that your employer would need to file an H-1B petition. Clear communication reduces employer hesitation.
Focus on roles with billable client work
Project-based Workday roles at consulting firms give employers a direct revenue justification for sponsorship. When your work generates billable hours from day one, the cost of sponsoring your visa is easier to absorb than in purely internal-facing positions.
Look for employers with existing H-1B filing history
Companies that have sponsored H-1B visas in the past are far more likely to do it again. Prioritize employers with a demonstrated track record of filing for Workday Consultants specifically, not just general sponsorship history in unrelated roles.
Workday Consultant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Workday Consultant jobs typically sponsor OPT students?
Yes, Workday Consultant roles are among the more OPT-friendly positions in enterprise software because demand for certified consultants consistently outpaces supply. Large implementation partners and SIs file H-1B petitions routinely for this role. You can browse OPT-eligible Workday Consultant openings directly on Migrate Mate, filtered by sponsorship availability.
Does a Workday Consultant role qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree. If you graduated with a STEM-designated degree such as Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or Information Technology, your role will likely qualify for the STEM extension. The job itself must also involve the direct application of your STEM degree. Check with your DSO to confirm eligibility before accepting an offer.
What visa does a Workday Consultant typically get sponsored for after OPT?
The H-1B is the most common path. Workday Consultant roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical or business field. Some Australian citizens in this role may also explore the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is significantly easier to obtain.
Is a Workday Consultant role classified as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Generally yes. USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for Workday Consultants where the role involves configuring, implementing, or integrating Workday modules and requires a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related field. Roles where any unrelated bachelor's degree satisfies the requirement can face RFEs, so the job description should specifically tie the degree to the work.
How long does a Workday Consultant role on OPT typically last before H-1B is required?
Standard OPT gives you 12 months of work authorization after graduation. If you qualify for the STEM extension, that extends to three years total. Your employer would need to file an H-1B petition during the April cap season, with an October 1 start date. If you start on OPT early enough, the STEM extension provides enough runway to cover two full lottery cycles.
