The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) works to provide a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public in New Mexico. The NMDOT Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal assistance and representation to management and statewide divisions and districts of the Agency.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
PURPOSE:
The Senior Paralegal provides broad administrative and paralegal assistance to the attorneys in the Office of General Counsel. This position will assist attorneys with legal processes including lawsuits and matters involving various legal proceedings such as preparation of case files which can include matters that involve identifying persons or entities having an interest in property which is the subject of a condemnation lawsuit. The Senior Paralegal is also responsible for electronic filing of legal documents and other pleadings and overseeing the litigation calendars of the OGC attorneys.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Significant attention to detail and experience proofreading pleadings, legal agreements, affidavits, and other documents.
- Electronic legal research.
- Preparation of trial exhibits.
- Working knowledge of maps and title reports.
- Preparation of legal documents and various legal pleadings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Occasional travel may be required.
