Safety Sensitive
Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the pharmacy managers, and according to standard procedure, prepares and dispenses medication and pharmaceuticals upon receiving orders from the physician. Documents and maintains all records according to state and federal law.
Job Duties:
- Review and interpret medication and pharmaceutical orders for inpatients and outpatients. Confer with providers when necessary to clarify or verify orders.
- Enter essential information pertaining to medication or pharmaceutical orders into the electronic medical record.
- Review medication or pharmaceutical entry for accuracy. Also reviews medication orders for allergies, drug interactions, over dosage, duplication and therapeutic parameters using professional knowledge and expertise to facilitate decisions.
- Prepares medications and pharmaceuticals for distribution to inpatients. Compounds products not commercially available when necessary. Checks medications filled by technicians for accuracy prior to delivery to nursing units.
- Accurately records orders for, and prepares, sterile products according to established procedures using proper sterile technique in the laminar flow hood. Applies a broad base of pharmaceutical knowledge to ensure compatibility to multi-additives of parenteral solutions. Follows recommended guidelines regarding the handling and preparation of cytotoxic and other hazardous products.
- Directs the pharmacy technician’s workflow; verifies their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals for accuracy.
- Assist with providing clinical services as directed through pharmacy protocols including pharmacokinetic dosing, renal dosing, patient educations, and formulation and monitoring of total parenteral nutrition.
- Provides specialized services to clinical specialty areas including neonatal nursery, oncology, cardiology, intensive care, and surgery.
- Provides drug information to allied health professionals when requested, including special literature searches, and provides drug information to patients when appropriate.
- Conducts monthly inspections of medication storage areas throughout the hospital and outpatient clinics as assigned.
- Issues controlled substances to nursing units and/or patients and maintains records for controlled substances.
- Prepares and presents in-service programs within the hospital and provides expertise to community outreach programs.
- Participates in department’s Quality Assurance program when assigned.

Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy. Active License through the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.
- Training and Experience: Previous hospital experience desired.
- Job Knowledge: General knowledge of state and federal drug laws as regulated by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Food and Drug Administration.
Essentials:
- Must be able to report to work fit for duty and free of any adverse effects of illegal drugs, medical marijuana, prescription medication, and/or alcohol.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with other individuals.
Physical Demands: Job responsibilities require a considerable amount of physical work. The individual will be required to assist with lifting or pushing up to 50 pounds. The individual must be able to bend over to perform certain duties, e.g., picking up boxes, filling machines, refilling supplies. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout the halls, stairways, in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. A significant amount of writing and computer entry is required.
