Power Systems Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a power systems engineer job in Houston?
Focus on Houston's Energy Corridor, where power generation companies, utilities, and large oil and gas operators concentrate most of their engineering hiring. Candidates with hands-on experience in grid reliability, substation design, or protection and control systems are in strongest demand locally. Familiarity with ERCOT, Texas's independent power grid, is a concrete differentiator that Houston employers look for and that candidates from other markets often lack.
Which companies hire power systems engineers in Houston?
Companies currently hiring power systems engineers in Houston include Fluor, CenterPoint Energy, and Sargent & Lundy, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's employer base skews heavily toward integrated energy companies, independent power producers, and engineering consulting firms serving the petrochemical and utilities sectors.
Are there remote power systems engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, but with limits: power systems engineering is heavily field-oriented, so fully remote roles are less common than in purely analytical fields. About 27% of power systems engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote work most available for load flow modeling, protection relay coordination studies, and project engineering roles that don't require on-site presence at substations or generation facilities.
How can I get a power systems engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is through engineering consulting firms and EPC contractors in the Energy Corridor, which regularly hire junior engineers for relay coordination, load studies, and design support. Internships with ERCOT-connected utilities or large industrial plant operators give Houston-specific grid exposure that stands out. Entry-level roles titled junior electrical engineer or power systems analyst are common stepping stones, and a background in MATLAB, ETAP, or PSS/E simulation software strengthens any early-career application here.
Which industries hire the most power systems engineers in Houston?
Houston power systems engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's position as the global hub for oil and gas, combined with its reliance on the ERCOT grid and a large base of independent power producers, drives sustained engineering demand across these sectors.
