Power Systems Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a power systems engineer in Texas?
The standard path in Texas is a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering followed by licensure as a Professional Engineer through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Candidates must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulate qualifying work experience, and then pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam with a power systems emphasis. Most Texas utility and engineering employers treat the PE license as a condition of advancement, and many require it at the senior level.
How much do power systems engineers make in Texas?
Power systems engineers in Texas earn a median of about $115,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,430 for the lowest 10% to over $177,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire power systems engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring power systems engineers in Texas right now include DNV, Electric Power Engineers, and Generac Power Systems, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's deregulated ERCOT grid and its concentration of investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, and large engineering consultancies keep demand for power systems talent consistently high across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most power systems engineer jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Dallas have the most power systems engineer openings in Texas. Houston's concentration of large engineering consultancies and energy company headquarters drives the bulk of openings, while Dallas-Fort Worth is anchored by major transmission operators like Oncor, and Austin draws demand from ERCOT's grid operations center and a growing number of renewable energy developers.
Are there remote power systems engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Power systems engineering is largely hands-on, requiring site visits, substation inspections, and close coordination with utility control rooms, which limits full remote work. About 36% of power systems engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to cluster in planning, modeling, and protection coordination roles that rely primarily on simulation software rather than field work.
How can I get hired as a power systems engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to rotational new-graduate programs run by Texas utilities and large engineering firms, where companies like Oncor, LCRA, and major consultancies regularly recruit electrical engineering graduates for entry-level protection, relay, or planning roles. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam before graduation signals readiness to employers and accelerates placement. Candidates transitioning from adjacent roles such as electrical design engineer or controls engineer also compete well, particularly if they have ETAP or PSS/E coursework or a senior capstone project involving power systems analysis.
Where can I find and apply to power systems engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to power systems engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across utilities, engineering consultancies, and energy companies. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly to the employers posting them.
