At BNY, our culture allows us to run our company better and enables employees’ growth and success. As a leading global financial services company at the heart of the global financial system, we influence nearly 20% of the world’s investible assets. Every day, our teams harness cutting-edge AI and breakthrough technologies to collaborate with clients, driving transformative solutions that redefine industries and uplift communities worldwide.
Recognized as a top destination for innovators, BNY is where bold ideas meet advanced technology and exceptional talent. Together, we power the future of finance - and this is what #LifeAtBNY is all about. Join us and be part of something extraordinary.
We're seeking a future team member for the role of Senior Vice President, Principal Full Stack Engineer to join our Performance Product Engineering team. This role is located in Boston, MA.
In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:
- Own the architecture end to end. Define and evolve the target-state design for the calculation platform: data model, computation engine, orchestration, APIs, and the interfaces our client-facing applications depend on. Make the build/buy/refactor calls and defend them in writing.
- Work across every team in the org. Lead cross-team design reviews, establish the patterns teams build against, and personally take on the integration problems that fall between teams and would otherwise go unowned.
- Be the technical partner to leadership. Sit with the Director of Engineering and product leadership before roadmap commitments are made, not after. Translate business intent into a technical strategy, and translate technical constraints into terms leadership can act on.
- Prototype and prove out new technology. We are actively investing in AI and ML, both in the product surface and in how we build. You will lead evaluation and adoption: what's real, what's hype, what we pilot, and what we take to production. Raise the engineering bar. Mentor senior engineers and tech leads. Set standards for design documentation, testing, performance, and correctness in a domain where a wrong number is a client-reportable event.
To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:
- 10+ years building and operating production software, with real depth on at least one side of the stack and genuine credibility on the other.
- Demonstrated architectural ownership of a system used by multiple teams. You have defined the design others built against, and lived with the consequences.
- Strong background in data-intensive, distributed, or high-throughput systems. Correctness and performance both matter here at scale.
- A track record of technical influence without formal authority. You have changed the direction of an organization through a design document, a prototype, or a well-argued review.
- Comfort with ambiguity and legacy. Much of this work is evolving a system that is already running and cannot stop running. Financial services, capital markets, or investment performance/attribution domain experience is a strong plus, not a requirement. We can help you build domain expertise. What matters most is the judgment and leadership you bring to the role.
Where this role can lead: This is a growing space with an expanding scope. For those who want to deepen their impact as individual contributors, it offers broader architectural ownership across adjacent platforms and a path toward our most senior technical roles. For those interested in management, there is an opportunity to build and lead a team in the areas you've already helped shape. Several of our current leaders followed that path. Management is an option, not an expectation, and remaining an individual contributor is not a constraint. In either case, the scope, impact, and influence of the role continue to expand.
Technology : Python and modern JVM languages. Polars and columnar compute. Snowflake and cloud data platforms. Azure and Kubernetes. Workflow orchestration. Angular/TypeScript front ends. CI/CD and infrastructure as code. Applied AI and LLM tooling. Exploring Rust. We care more about how you reason about systems than about which of these you have used.

Principal Full Stack Engineer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal full stack engineer in Massachusetts?
The principal full stack engineer title is reached through a progression of engineering roles rather than a state-issued license, as Massachusetts imposes no specific credential for software engineering work. Most hiring managers in the state expect a strong computer science foundation, typically from a four-year degree or a demonstrated equivalent, followed by years of progressively senior engineering contributions. Boston-area employers place particular weight on system design depth, open-source or portfolio work, and evidence of technical leadership such as driving architecture decisions or mentoring teams.
How much do principal full stack engineers make in Massachusetts?
Principal full stack engineers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $165,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,810 for the lowest 10% to over $213,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal full stack engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring principal full stack engineers in Massachusetts right now include BNY, General Medicine, and Chewy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's density of fintech, enterprise software, and life sciences technology companies means principal-level full stack roles turn over regularly across both large public companies and well-funded growth-stage firms headquartered in and around Boston.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most principal full stack engineer jobs?
The cities with the most principal full stack engineer openings in Massachusetts are Boston, Cambridge, and Bedford. Boston and Cambridge dominate because of the concentration of technology company headquarters, university-affiliated research spinouts, and major financial services firms, while suburban corridors like Waltham and Burlington attract large engineering centers for national software and defense technology companies that prefer campus-style office environments.
Are there remote principal full stack engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. Principal full stack engineering is inherently a desk-based, collaborative role that adapts well to distributed work, making it one of the more remote-accessible positions in technology. About 33% of principal full stack engineer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how normalized flexible arrangements have become in the state's software sector. Architecture review, technical mentorship, and code review work are particularly well suited to remote formats.
How can I get hired as a principal full stack engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path into the engineering track that leads to principal roles is landing a junior or associate software engineer position at a Massachusetts company with a structured mentorship culture. Large Boston-area employers like Wayfair and Liberty Mutual run new-graduate engineering programs that place candidates directly into full stack teams, and firms across the Route 128 corridor regularly hire from co-op programs at Northeastern, WPI, and UMass Amherst. Building a public portfolio of full stack projects, contributing to open-source repositories, and targeting companies with internal promotion ladders gives candidates without long work histories a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to principal full stack engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to principal full stack engineer jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your stack, seniority, and location preference, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
