Project Controls Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project controls manager in New York?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field followed by several years in cost or schedule control roles on capital projects. New York does not have a state-issued license specific to project controls, but employers across the state consistently favor candidates who hold PMI credentials such as the Planning and Scheduling Professional certification. Large infrastructure owners and construction managers in New York City and Albany typically require demonstrated experience with public agency reporting standards.
How much do project controls managers make in New York?
Project controls managers in New York earn a median of about $121,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,580 for the lowest 10% to over $192,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project controls managers in New York?
Employers hiring project controls managers in New York right now include Johnson Controls, Colliers Engineering & Design, and Island Peer Review Organization, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's volume of major public infrastructure programs, from transit expansions to utility upgrades, means both large general contractors and owner-side agencies maintain steady project controls hiring throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most project controls manager jobs?
New York, Albany, and Dunkirk are the cities with the most project controls manager openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share of demand through its concentration of major construction firms, transit authorities, and utility operators, while Buffalo and Albany generate openings tied to regional infrastructure investment, state agency capital programs, and university system expansions.
Are there remote project controls manager jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're limited. Project controls work often requires on-site presence for schedule walks, contractor meetings, and document verification, which keeps most roles at least partially field-adjacent. About 10% of project controls manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The tasks most suited to remote work are cost reporting, earned value analysis, and executive dashboard preparation rather than active construction oversight.
How can I get hired as a project controls manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a junior cost engineer or project controls analyst role, which large New York contractors and public authorities use as a pipeline for future managers. Firms such as Turner Construction and AECOM in New York City hire entry-level controls analysts from engineering and construction management programs, particularly candidates who can demonstrate proficiency in Primavera P6. Pursuing the PMI Planning and Scheduling Professional certification early signals seriousness and meaningfully narrows the experience gap for competitive New York openings.
Where can I find and apply to project controls manager jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to project controls manager jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and target location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
