Regional Planner Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Ohio?
Most regional planner positions in Ohio require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, or a closely related field, with a master's degree preferred for government and MPO roles. Ohio does not issue a state planning license, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential, awarded through the American Institute of Certified Planners exam, is widely expected for advancement. Entry candidates without the credential can still apply and pursue it after gaining qualifying work experience.
Which companies hire regional planners in Ohio?
Employers hiring regional planners in Ohio right now include DHL, Airgas, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Ohio's metropolitan planning organizations, county engineer offices, and mid-size planning and engineering consulting firms are among the most consistent sources of openings across the state.
Which Ohio cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The cities with the most regional planner openings in Ohio are Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. Columbus dominates because it is home to the state capital, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, and a dense cluster of engineering and consulting firms, while Cleveland and Cincinnati both host major metropolitan planning organizations and county agencies that hire regularly.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Ohio?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since regional planners frequently attend public meetings, conduct site visits, and coordinate with local agencies in person. About 31% of regional planner openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to cover research, GIS analysis, grant writing, and report preparation rather than direct community engagement work.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for planning technician or planning assistant roles at Ohio county planning departments or metropolitan planning organizations, where competition is lower than at state agencies. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission and county planning offices in Franklin, Cuyahoga, and Hamilton counties periodically hire new graduates. Building GIS proficiency, completing an internship through an Ohio university planning program, and applying for the American Institute of Certified Planners candidate status early all strengthen applications significantly.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current Ohio openings in one place. Search the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match your experience and location preferences.
