Who's Hiring

Regional Planner Jobs in Columbus: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a regional planner job in Columbus?
Target Columbus's dense cluster of public-sector and consulting employers: the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, Franklin County planning offices, and city of Columbus development departments are the most active hirers. Candidates with GIS proficiency, transit planning exposure, or experience with Ohio's transportation funding programs stand out. Networking through the Ohio chapter of the American Planning Association also opens doors to roles before they post publicly.
Which companies hire regional planners in Columbus?
Companies currently hiring regional planners in Columbus include Peak Retirement Planning, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and NBBJ, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Columbus draws a mix of municipal agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and national engineering consultancies with strong Ohio practices.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Columbus?
Yes, though regional planning skews toward in-person work given its reliance on site visits, public hearings, and local stakeholder meetings. About 25% of regional planner openings tied to Columbus are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with flexibility most common in data analysis, GIS mapping, and long-range planning functions. Roles tied to zoning review or community outreach are typically on-site.
How can I get a regional planner job in Columbus with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Columbus is an internship or graduate assistantship with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission or a Franklin County agency, which regularly bring on candidates from Ohio State's City and Regional Planning program. Entry-level titles like planning technician or GIS analyst are common stepping stones. A strong portfolio demonstrating land-use analysis or transportation modeling relevant to Columbus's ongoing development projects gives early-career candidates a clear edge.
