Tips for Your Remote Controls Engineer Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote controls engineer openings from across the U.S. in one place. Search for roles that match your PLC platform experience and apply directly. Remote postings at established firms fill faster than on-site ones, so applying early gives you a real advantage.
Show remote-ready documentation skills
Remote controls engineers must communicate system logic in writing without being able to walk someone through it in person. Include examples of functional design specs, control narratives, or annotated ladder logic in your application materials to prove you can work async with distributed teams.
List your PLC and SCADA platforms explicitly
Remote employers filter on specific platforms, including Rockwell Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, Wonderware, and Ignition. Name every platform you've programmed, commissioned, or maintained in your resume's skills section so your application clears automated screens before a recruiter ever reads it.
Prepare to demo work remotely in interviews
Remote controls engineer interviews often include a technical screen where you walk through your own code or a take-home PLC problem over a video call. Have a working project in your programming environment ready to share your screen and explain your logic decisions under light pressure.
Remote Controls Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote controls engineer job?
Target companies that run distributed engineering teams, including remote-first automation software firms, industrial IoT companies, and OEMs with geographically spread facilities. Remote employers screen for proficiency in PLC programming languages like Ladder Logic and Structured Text, strong written technical communication for async handoffs, and the ability to troubleshoot and commission systems with limited on-site support. Candidates who can document control logic clearly and demonstrate self-directed project delivery consistently stand out.
Which companies hire remote controls engineers?
Companies hiring remote controls engineers right now include ENFRA, Sargent & Lundy, and Interstates Companies, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Remote controls engineer roles tend to concentrate at automation software vendors, industrial systems integrators, and energy companies that support distributed plant operations with centralized engineering teams.
Can you get a remote controls engineer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level controls engineer roles are harder to land because employers expect you to operate independently from day one without on-site mentorship. Your best path is to build a portfolio of PLC or SCADA projects, even simulated ones, that shows real logic design and documentation. Remote-first automation startups and smaller systems integrators are more open to entry-level remote candidates who demonstrate strong technical writing and self-directed learning.
Do you need a degree for remote controls engineer jobs?
Not always. Many remote employers prioritize demonstrated PLC programming skills, HMI development experience, and a history of delivering control system projects over a specific credential. An associate degree in electrical or automation technology combined with hands-on project work can be as competitive as a four-year degree. Certifications in platforms like Rockwell, Siemens, or Schneider Electric carry real weight with remote hiring teams screening on technical ability.
Which industries hire the most remote controls engineers?
Most remote controls engineer openings sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Energy, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. These sectors hire controls engineers remotely because they operate distributed facilities or product lines that require centralized engineering support across multiple sites without requiring engineers to be physically present at each one.
