Tips for Your Remote Developer Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote developer openings from across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your stack and apply directly. Remote postings often close fast when a distributed team fills a specific skill gap.
Show async communication in your portfolio
Remote engineering teams depend on written communication. Include README files, pull request descriptions, and documented decision logs in your GitHub repos so hiring managers can see how you think and communicate without a meeting.
Target remote-first companies deliberately
Remote-first firms have built their entire engineering culture around distributed work, which means stronger tooling, clearer async processes, and better onboarding for remote hires. Look for companies that list remote as their default, not an exception.
Prepare for asynchronous technical interviews
Many remote developer hiring processes include take-home coding exercises or async video responses instead of live whiteboard sessions. Practice explaining your code in writing and record yourself walking through a solution so you're comfortable with the format.
Demonstrate self-directed project work
Remote employers want evidence that you can scope, build, and ship work without daily check-ins. Side projects with a clear problem statement, a working demo, and a write-up of the technical decisions you made stand out in a remote application.
Remote Developer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote developer job?
Target companies that are remote-first or have established distributed engineering teams, since they have the infrastructure and culture to onboard developers without an office. Remote employers screen heavily for self-direction, clear async written communication, and the ability to ship work independently. A strong GitHub portfolio, documented side projects, and experience with tools like Git, Slack, and Jira give candidates a concrete edge.
Which companies hire remote developers?
Companies hiring remote developers right now include Speechify, CVS Health, and Syms Strategic Group, LLC (SSG), based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote developer roles are especially common at remote-first software firms, distributed SaaS teams, and technology departments in fintech and healthtech companies.
Can you get a remote developer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level developer roles are harder to land because employers expect you to work independently from day one without in-person guidance. Startups and small remote-first product teams are more likely to hire junior developers remotely. What opens the door is a portfolio of real, deployed projects, contributions to open-source repositories, and evidence that you can communicate clearly in writing.
Do you need a degree for remote developer jobs?
Not always. Remote employers consistently hire developers who can demonstrate skills through a portfolio, past work, or completed projects rather than requiring a four-year degree. What matters most is that you can show working code, understand the stack the team uses, and communicate your technical decisions clearly in written form, which is essential for distributed teams.
Which industries hire the most remote developers?
The sectors hiring the most remote developers are Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These industries rely on distributed engineering teams that build and maintain software products entirely across remote locations.
