Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead GIS Integration Engineer to drive the technical design, architecture, and delivery of a Next-Generation GIS Program. This role is critical in integrating legacy Smallworld GIS and modern Esri Utility Network data into an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS).
The ideal candidate will bridge enterprise GIS, real-time Operational Technology (OT), and cloud-native data engineering by establishing scalable, event-driven data pipelines within an AWS environment to ensure seamless synchronization during a multi-year transformation.
Key Responsibilities
GIS Integration & Architecture
-
Interface Design: Lead the architecture of high-availability integrations between Smallworld, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise (Utility Network), and the ADMS platform.
-
Event-Driven Pipelines: Design and implement real-time data streams using Apache Kafka (MSK) for incremental network model updates and spatial asset changes.
-
Model Reconciliation: Resolve data model conflicts, schema mismatches, and business rule differences when translating GIS connectivity into ADMS topology.
-
Standards Enforcement: Define and enforce integration standards, data contracts, and API design patterns (REST/SOAP).
Data Engineering & Migration Cutover
-
Spatial ETL Pipelines: Build end-to-end ETL pipelines using FME Form/Flow and Python, including automated deployment and auditing.
-
Coexistence Strategy: Enable dual-source data ingestion to support phased migration (handling active circuits from both Smallworld and Esri simultaneously).
-
Runbook Execution: Develop migration runbooks, validation scripts, and automated rollback procedures for production cutovers.
Cloud & DevOps
-
Cloud Infrastructure: Design and manage AWS infrastructure for GIS and streaming workloads (EC2, S3, RDS/Aurora, Lambda, ECS/EKS, API Gateway).
-
CI/CD Automation: Implement CI/CD pipelines and branching strategies using Git alongside Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation).
-
Observability: Monitor pipeline health, establish alerting via CloudWatch, and lead incident response for production systems.
Required Qualifications
-
Experience: 8+ years in GIS engineering, system integration, or spatial data engineering, with 3+ years in a technical leadership role.
-
Domain Expertise: Experience delivering GIS-to-ADMS/OMS integrations (e.g., GE, Schneider Electric, Oracle, Hitachi/ABB) within electric or gas utilities.
-
Data Standards: Strong understanding of CIM (IEC 61968 & 61970) standards for utility data exchange.
-
Streaming & ETL: Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka (topic design, producers/consumers, schema registry) and FME Form/Flow.
-
Programming: Advanced Python skills using spatial libraries (GeoPandas, Shapely, Fiona, ArcPy) and API frameworks (FastAPI).
-
Databases: Expertise in PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Oracle Spatial.
Preferred Qualifications
-
AWS Certified Solutions Architect certification.
-
Experience with Smallworld CASE tools or Esri Utility Network configuration.
-
Experience with automated testing frameworks for spatial data (e.g., Pytest).
-
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
Technical Environment
Core Systems: GE Smallworld, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1+ (Utility Network), ADMS
Streaming & Cloud: Apache Kafka / AWS MSK, AWS services (Lambda, S3, RDS, EKS)
Development & DevOps: Python (GeoPandas, FastAPI), FME Form/Flow, Terraform, Git, CI/CD
Work Environment & Travel
Location: Hybrid / Remote Eligible (Charlotte, NC preferred)
Travel: Up to 20% for onsite workshops, stakeholder meetings, and critical migration cutovers

Tips for Your Remote Gis Analyst Job Search
Tailor your resume to GIS software
List specific software versions you've used, such as ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or FME, not just the platform name. Hiring managers and applicant tracking systems filter on exact tool names, so generic entries like 'GIS software' often get skipped.
Build a portfolio of spatial analysis work
Upload project maps, geodatabases, or Python scripts to a public repository or personal site. Gis analyst interviews routinely ask you to walk through past deliverables, so having links ready gives you a concrete advantage over candidates who can only describe their work.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists gis analyst openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by data domain, not just title
Search for terms like 'LiDAR analyst', 'geospatial engineer', or 'spatial data scientist' alongside the standard title. Many employers post the same role under different names depending on their industry, so a narrow title search misses real openings.
Prepare for a technical skills assessment
Most gis analyst hiring processes include a take-home task or live exercise, often involving data cleaning, projection troubleshooting, or a map layout deliverable. Practice building a clean, reproducible workflow in advance so you can complete the assessment efficiently under time pressure.
Negotiate using deliverable scope, not just title
When discussing compensation, frame your ask around the complexity of datasets you manage or the number of stakeholders your analysis supports. Concrete scope language is more persuasive than citing seniority level alone, especially in government or consulting environments where salary bands are tied to demonstrated output.
Remote Gis Analyst Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote gis analyst job?
Target companies that already run distributed teams, since they hire remotely by default and know how to onboard someone they never meet in person. Remote gis analyst employers screen hard for self-direction and clear written communication on top of the core skills, so show evidence you can own work without someone over your shoulder. Apply to the openings above that match your experience.
Which companies hire remote gis analysts?
Employers currently hiring remote gis analysts include ARDENT, Accenture Federal Services, and Hitachi Global Air Power Us, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first firms and large companies running distributed teams post the most remote gis analyst roles.
Can you get a remote gis analyst job with no experience?
Yes, but it is harder than an on-site role, because remote work expects you to operate independently from the start. Entry-level remote gis analyst openings do exist, especially at remote-first companies, and a portfolio of real work helps more than a long resume. Applying broadly to the roles that fit improves your odds.
Do you need a degree for remote gis analyst jobs?
Not always. Many employers hire remote gis analysts on demonstrated skills and prior work rather than a specific degree, though some larger companies still prefer one. Showing relevant results matters more than a credential for most remote gis analyst roles.
Which industries hire the most remote gis analysts?
Remote gis analyst roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Technology & Software, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors run distributed teams and hire gis analysts remotely most consistently.
