INTRODUCTION
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1000+ colleagues in 70+ countries and very few office based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution. The company is founder led, profitable and growing. The mission of the LXD team is to build a next-generation private cloud infrastructure, combining KVM, Ceph, and SDN technologies to create a data center scale cloud that 'just works' and provides a mission-critical cloud for edge and core enterprise deployments.
We are hiring a Golang software engineer to work on the low level Go codebase sitting between our REST API and the low level C libraries used to manage containers and virtual machines. We are looking for system-level developers with experience in design and data management/modeling. LXD components span the entire software stack from low-level kernel features to the upper level management API/CLI. Our most effective engineers are fluent in all these layers, and able to anticipate the consequences of design and engineering choices elsewhere in a complex distributed system. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to have a meaningful impact on modern cloud computing technologies. Canonical offers a fun, fast-paced team environment and a career full of learning and development.

Tips for Your Remote Golang Engineer Job Search
Show async communication skills upfront
Remote golang teams rely on written communication to move fast without meetings. Include a README, design doc, or PR description in your portfolio that shows you can explain technical decisions clearly. That evidence matters more than a cover letter.
Demonstrate remote-ready Go tooling familiarity
Remote golang roles almost always involve distributed systems, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines. Make sure your portfolio shows real work with Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, or equivalent tools. Employers hiring remotely want proof you can operate in their existing stack without hand-holding.
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote golang engineer openings from across the U.S. in one place. Search the current listings, find roles that match your stack and experience level, and apply directly. Remote roles close fast when a distributed team finds a strong candidate.
Prepare for asynchronous technical interviews
Many remote golang teams use async take-home assessments instead of live coding rounds. Treat each take-home as a real work sample: write clean, idiomatic Go, add tests, and document your reasoning. Reviewers are assessing how you work independently, not just whether the code runs.
Target remote-first companies in your applications
Remote-first engineering organizations have async workflows, documented processes, and onboarding built for distributed teams. These companies are far more likely to give remote golang engineers real ownership early and promote from within distributed teams than companies that treat remote as an exception.
Remote Golang Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote golang engineer job?
Target companies that are remote-first or run fully distributed engineering teams, since they're built to onboard and manage engineers without in-person oversight. Remote golang employers screen hard for self-direction, clear async written communication, and hands-on experience with Go concurrency, microservices, and cloud infrastructure like Kubernetes or AWS. A public GitHub repo with real Go projects gives you a concrete edge over candidates who only list skills.
Which companies hire remote golang engineers?
Employers currently hiring remote golang engineers include Conexess, Jack Henry & Associates, and Nvidia, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The strongest remote demand comes from remote-first software companies, fintech platforms, and cloud infrastructure teams running distributed engineering organizations.
Can you get a remote golang engineer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level golang roles are harder to land because you're expected to work independently from day one without in-person mentorship. Your best path is open-source Go contributions, a portfolio of deployed projects, and targeting smaller remote-first startups where junior engineers get real backend ownership early. Demonstrated async communication skills matter as much as the code itself.
Do you need a degree for remote golang engineer jobs?
Not always. Remote golang employers care most about what you've shipped: real Go codebases, system design experience, and the ability to communicate clearly in writing across time zones. A degree can help with initial screening at larger companies, but a strong GitHub portfolio, relevant open-source work, or prior remote engineering roles consistently outweigh formal credentials.
Which industries hire the most remote golang engineers?
The sectors hiring the most remote golang engineers are Technology & Software and Electronics & Hardware, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These industries rely on distributed engineering teams building high-throughput backend systems where Go's performance and concurrency model are a natural fit.
