AHEAD is seeking a Principal Observability & Reliability Architect to join AHEAD’s Observability Practice within Intelligent Operations. This is a senior, client-facing architecture and delivery leadership role focused on helping enterprise clients improve operational visibility, service reliability, incident response, telemetry governance, and business-service visibility. The role operates as a player-coach, pairing senior advisory leadership with hands-on architecture guidance across observability platforms, telemetry pipelines, AIOps, and SRE-aligned operating models. It spans the full engagement lifecycle: pursuit solutioning, discovery, architecture design, estimation, delivery governance, escalation, and practice enablement.
Responsibilities
- Lead client discovery, architecture workshops, and solution design across observability, telemetry, reliability, and operational intelligence initiatives.
- Design enterprise observability architectures spanning monitoring, logging, metrics, tracing, telemetry pipelines, alerting, event correlation, service visibility, and platform integrations.
- Define scalable standards for telemetry onboarding, naming, tagging, RBAC, service ownership, dashboards, alert governance, runbooks, and operational handoff.
- Advise on telemetry governance, including data quality, retention, access control, sampling, cardinality, and cost optimization.
- Lead modernization initiatives including tool rationalization, dashboard and alert rationalization, telemetry strategy, and migration from legacy monitoring platforms.
- Guide SRE practices including SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, production readiness, and incident response maturity.
- Design integration patterns across ITSM, CMDB, event management, and automation platforms.
- Support pursuits by shaping solution strategy, validating scope, informing estimates, and building client-facing technical narratives.
- Serve as a senior escalation point and provide architecture governance during delivery.
- Build reusable reference architectures, playbooks, and accelerators while mentoring architects, consultants, and offshore teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years in observability, monitoring, APM, platform operations, SRE, or related enterprise technology domains, including 5+ years leading architecture and delivery strategy for enterprise observability or reliability initiatives.
- Deep, hands-on experience designing and implementing across monitoring, logging, metrics, tracing, telemetry collection, and pipeline patterns in hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
- Strong knowledge of telemetry governance, including routing, transformation, normalization, enrichment, retention, access control, and cost management.
- Experience defining enterprise standards for dashboards, alerts, tagging, naming, service ownership, RBAC, and operating model adoption.
- Strong command of incident response, event correlation, alert strategy, service health, and business-service visibility, plus applied SRE concepts including SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and production readiness.
- Ability to lead executive and technical workshops and translate business needs into actionable architecture and delivery plans.
- Consulting or professional services experience with strong client-facing communication, estimation, risk management, and cross-functional leadership.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Platform experience such as Dynatrace, Splunk, Grafana, LogicMonitor, Datadog, New Relic, AppDynamics, Elastic, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.
- Experience with telemetry pipeline tools such as OpenTelemetry Collector, Grafana Alloy, Fluent Bit, Kafka, Cribl, or Vector, along with familiarity with cloud, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
- Experience integrating with platforms such as ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, BigPanda, or xMatters.
- Experience developing reusable consulting assets such as reference architectures, governance models, playbooks, POVs, and accelerators; relevant cloud, SRE, ITIL, or FinOps certifications are a plus.
The compensation range indicated in this posting reflects the On-Target Earnings (“OTE”) for this role, which includes a base salary and any applicable target bonus amount. This OTE range may vary based on the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, and geographic location.

Tips for Your Remote Principal Engineer Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote principal engineer openings from across the U.S. in one place. Search by role and apply directly to the ones that match your technical background and level without sorting through unrelated listings.
Show async leadership in your portfolio
Remote employers hiring at the principal level want proof you can lead without a whiteboard. Publish architecture decision records, design documents, or technical RFCs publicly so hiring managers can evaluate your thinking before the first call.
Target companies built for distributed engineering
Remote-first companies and teams that have operated across time zones for years hire principal engineers differently than firms experimenting with remote. Look for companies with engineering blogs, public runbooks, or documented engineering culture, which signals that async and written communication are already how they work.
Prepare for remote system design interviews
Remote principal engineer interviews frequently rely on written or async system design exercises rather than live whiteboard sessions. Practice explaining trade-offs in clear written form and be ready to walk through diagrams over video using shared tools like Miro or Excalidraw.
Clarify remote expectations before you accept
Remote principal engineer roles vary in how much synchronous overlap they require. Ask about core hours, on-call expectations, and how architecture reviews happen so you know whether the role fits your working style and time zone before you commit.
Remote Principal Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote principal engineer job?
Remote principal engineer roles go to candidates who can demonstrate technical leadership without in-person oversight. Remote-first companies and distributed teams screen heavily for written communication, async decision-making, and the ability to drive architecture decisions independently. Strong public work like open-source contributions, design documents, or detailed technical writing gives you a concrete edge over candidates who can only describe their work verbally.
Which companies hire remote principal engineers?
Remote principal engineer roles are posted by CVS Health, Speechify, and Humana and others right now, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first technology companies, distributed SaaS teams, and engineering-heavy firms in fintech and cloud infrastructure tend to post the most principal engineer roles with no location requirement.
Can you get a remote principal engineer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry into principal-level work is harder because you're expected to self-direct from day one without a manager nearby. Remote-first startups and early-stage distributed teams are the most open to candidates who haven't held the title before. What opens the door is showing concrete evidence of technical leadership: architecture decisions you've owned, systems you've designed end-to-end, or cross-team technical work you've led.
Do you need a degree for remote principal engineer jobs?
Not always. Remote employers hiring principal engineers weigh demonstrated technical depth and leadership track over formal credentials. What matters most is whether you can show you've owned complex systems, made sound architecture calls, and communicated those decisions clearly in writing. A portfolio of real work, published design documents, or open-source contributions often carries more weight than a degree for this level of role.
Which industries hire the most remote principal engineers?
Remote principal engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors hire principal engineers remotely because their products are built and shipped entirely by distributed teams, making location irrelevant to the work.
