Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and test novel algorithms for autonomous driving, focusing on uncertainty- and interaction-aware motion planning to address perception noise, state uncertainty, and multimodal motion prediction uncertainty in dynamic environments involving multiple vehicles and pedestrians, within a model predictive control (MPC) framework.
- Extend the MPC-based motion planning stack to incorporate uncertainty modeling (state, model, multimodal prediction), socially acceptable interaction-aware behaviors, real-time interactions, partial observability and occlusion.
- Evaluate the performance, safety, and robustness of the proposed algorithms in simulation environments, including uncertain dynamic scenarios involving pedestrians and other vehicles.
- Collaborate with HRI scientists and engineers to integrate findings into practical applications.
- Submit research findings to leading academic conferences or journals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. candidate in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or similar fields.
- Strong background and experience in at least one of the following: motion planning and decision-making under uncertainty, interaction-aware motion planning, occlusion-aware planning, active learning, or reinforcement learning.
- Experience with model predictive control (MPC).
- Programming and software design skills in C++ and Python.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Research Intern Jobs in Mountain View: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a research intern job in Mountain View?
Focus your search on Mountain View's dominant research sectors: AI and machine learning, semiconductor design, and biotech. The North Bayshore corridor and Moffett Field area host the highest concentration of research-focused employers. Candidates who can demonstrate hands-on lab or coding project experience, even from coursework, stand out. Targeting companies that run structured intern cohorts each quarter gives you the best shot at a real research contribution role.
Which companies hire research interns in Mountain View?
Employers hiring research interns in Mountain View right now include Honda Research Institute USA, ATOMS, and Intuit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Mountain View's employer mix skews heavily toward large technology firms with dedicated research divisions alongside early-stage startups spinning out of the local university and national lab ecosystem.
Are there remote research intern jobs in Mountain View?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the type of research work. Computational, data analysis, and literature-review roles are the most remote-friendly, while hardware, wet-lab, and instrumentation positions almost always require on-site presence. About 50% of research intern openings tied to Mountain View are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, concentrated in software and AI research teams rather than physical science labs.
How can I get a research intern job in Mountain View with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Mountain View is targeting AI and data research teams that hire undergraduates for structured summer or semester cohorts. Smaller startups in the Castro Street area and spin-outs near Moffett Field often bring on junior research interns for specific project sprints where prior professional experience matters less than demonstrated curiosity and technical coursework. Building a visible portfolio of independent projects, even short analyses or replicated papers, signals initiative to local hiring managers.
