Retail Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a retail in New York?
Most retail positions in New York do not require a state-issued license, but roles involving alcohol sales require compliance with New York State Liquor Authority regulations, and pharmacy retail roles require relevant state credentials. Entry-level positions typically require a high school diploma, while supervisory and management roles favor candidates with an associate or bachelor's degree in business or a related field. New York City's dense retail market means in-person experience in a customer-facing role carries significant weight with employers.
How much do retails make in New York?
Retails in New York earn a median of about $37,720 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $33,650 for the lowest 10% to over $58,630 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire retails in New York?
Employers hiring retails in New York right now include GameStop, Finish Line, and Dollar General, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's mix of flagship luxury stores, national chains, and regional specialty retailers means openings are spread across a wide range of formats and price points throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most retail jobs?
The cities with the most retail openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. New York City dominates the market due to its sheer density of flagship stores, shopping corridors, and mall-anchor tenants, while suburban markets like Long Island and areas near Albany draw volume from large-format chains and regional shopping centers that serve commuter populations.
Are there remote retail jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 4% of retail openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most retail work. The roles most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are in corporate retail functions such as buying, merchandising coordination, e-commerce operations, and wholesale account management rather than store-floor positions.
How can I get hired as a retail in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for sales associate or stock associate roles at large-format retailers, which regularly hire candidates with no prior experience. New York City flagships for brands like H&M, Gap, and Uniqlo run structured onboarding programs for first-time retail workers. Candidates who complete a customer service or retail fundamentals certificate through CUNY's workforce programs gain a measurable edge, and experience in food service, hospitality, or event staffing often transfers directly into a retail interview.
Where can I find and apply to retail jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to retail jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to New York employers and locations. Find the roles that fit your experience and schedule and apply directly through the listings on this page.
