DESCRIPTION
AWS Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM) is seeking a Risk Specialist to join our team within Risk Management Excellence (RMX). In this role, you will serve as a key operator within the TPRM program, responsible for monitoring, assessing, and reporting on risks associated with AWS’s critical third-party ecosystem.
You will manage ongoing risk surveillance through the Sentinel platform, produce executive-level risk intelligence reports, support regulatory audits, lead financial viability assessments, and coordinate incident response documentation. This is a highly cross-functional role that partners with AWS service teams, legal, compliance, supply chain, and external vendors to ensure third-party risks are identified, measured, and mitigated.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong analytical skills, an eye for process improvement, and comfort navigating ambiguity in a fast-moving cloud infrastructure environment.
Key job responsibilities
You will monitor third-party risk alerts and escalate issues as they arise, ensuring risks are identified and addressed quickly. You will own the monthly risk report from draft through executive distribution, and track key metrics that measure program health. You will produce on-demand risk profiles for internal stakeholders using financial intelligence platforms and AI-assisted tooling. You will lead financial viability assessments for critical vendors—collecting due diligence reviews, distributing risk surveys, and scoring financial health—while partnering with engineering to automate data collection. You will serve as the team’s point of contact for regulatory and customer audits, and document third-party incidents in coordination with security operations. You will also drive vendor reassessments, process risk nominations for new and existing third parties, and participate in launch reviews for new AWS services. Throughout, you will look for ways to streamline operations through automation, tooling improvements, and well-maintained runbooks.
A day in the life
You start the day triaging Sentinel alerts and actioning third-party risk indicators—executing overrides, updating logs, and filing tickets. Midday, you shift to project work: pulling financial health data for a viability assessment, drafting a risk summary for a stakeholder request, or coordinating audit evidence with a program manager. You may join a cross-functional call with Legal or Supply Chain on an open incident. Afternoons are for reporting and improvement—updating reassessment trackers, compiling the flash report, or partnering with engineering on an automation that saves the team hours each week.

Risk Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a risk manager in Virginia?
Becoming a risk manager in Virginia typically starts with a bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field, followed by relevant work experience in audit, compliance, or financial analysis. Virginia does not require a state-issued license for most risk management roles, but employers widely expect credentials such as the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) or Professional Risk Manager (PRM) certification. Federal contracting and financial services firms in Northern Virginia and Richmond place particular weight on these credentials.
Which companies hire risk managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring risk managers in Virginia right now include Capital One, Information Technology Senior Management Forum, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal financial regulators, and large bank holding companies makes it one of the more consistently active states for risk management hiring.
Which Virginia cities have the most risk manager jobs?
McLean, Richmond, and Arlington have the most risk manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and financial technology firms, while Richmond draws consistent demand from major bank headquarters and insurance carriers, and Virginia Beach reflects risk roles tied to the region's large military installations and healthcare systems.
Are there remote risk manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many fields, since risk management is primarily an analytical and advisory role that translates well to remote work. About 36% of risk manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of much of the work. Roles focused on enterprise risk modeling, regulatory reporting, and policy development are the most likely to be offered remotely or on a hybrid schedule.
How can I get hired as a risk manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a role as a risk analyst or internal audit associate, which large Virginia employers such as Capital One and Freddie Mac post specifically for candidates with limited experience. Lateral moves from compliance, finance operations, or data analyst positions are also common entry points. Pursuing the FRM or PRM certification early signals commitment and gives candidates an edge, particularly with Northern Virginia financial services and federal consulting firms that run structured analyst development programs.
Where can I find and apply to risk manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to risk manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across industries including financial services, defense contracting, and healthcare.
