Senior Data Science Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior data science engineer in Washington?
Washington does not require a state-issued license for senior data science engineers, so the path runs through education and demonstrated experience. Most hiring managers in the Seattle-Bellevue corridor expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, with a master's degree preferred for senior roles. Candidates typically need several years of hands-on model development and deployment work, and building a portfolio of production-grade projects strengthens applications considerably at Washington's large technology employers.
How much do senior data science engineers make in Washington?
Senior data science engineers in Washington earn a median of about $163,350 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,930 for the lowest 10% to over $220,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior data science engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring senior data science engineers in Washington right now include Amazon, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's density of major technology headquarters and aerospace firms means that senior-level openings tend to require experience with large-scale systems and cross-functional product collaboration.
Which Washington cities have the most senior data science engineer jobs?
Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond account for the largest share of senior data science engineer openings in Washington. Seattle drives the volume as the headquarters city for major technology and e-commerce companies, while Bellevue and Redmond reflect the dense campus presence of enterprise software and cloud-services firms that cluster on the Eastside and consistently maintain large data science teams.
Are there remote senior data science engineer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields. Senior data science engineering is a highly desk-based and collaborative-tool-driven discipline, making it well suited to remote arrangements. About 80% of senior data science engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the broader flexibility that Washington's technology sector has extended to analytical and engineering roles. Model development, research, and pipeline work are the functions most commonly offered with full remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a senior data science engineer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an associate or junior data scientist role at one of Washington's large technology employers, where internal mobility into senior positions is well established. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon run structured new-graduate programs and rotational tracks that funnel candidates with strong academic backgrounds into applied data science work. Lateral moves from adjacent roles such as data analyst, machine learning engineer, or business intelligence developer are common. A portfolio of end-to-end machine learning projects, contributions to open-source repositories, and a master's degree from a Washington research university like the University of Washington significantly improve early-career candidacy.
Where can I find and apply to senior data science engineer jobs in Washington?
