Senior Devops Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior devops engineer in Virginia?
Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work as a senior devops engineer, so the path runs through education, certifications, and clearance. Most roles expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field, paired with vendor certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, or Certified Kubernetes Administrator. Because so much Virginia hiring is defense-adjacent, obtaining a DoD security clearance early is one of the strongest accelerators for career advancement in this market.
How much do senior devops engineers make in Virginia?
Senior devops engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior devops engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring senior devops engineers in Virginia right now include KDA Consulting, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Nucorevision, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's dense concentration of federal contractors and cloud infrastructure providers means demand is consistent across both government-facing and commercial technology teams throughout the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most senior devops engineer jobs?
The cities with the most senior devops engineer openings in Virginia are McLean, Chantilly, and Reston. Northern Virginia dominates because it is home to the highest concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and hyperscale data center operators in the country, while Richmond and Hampton Roads generate demand through state government technology programs and large military installation support contracts.
Are there remote senior devops engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 32% of senior devops engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves cloud platforms and pipeline tooling that can be managed from anywhere. The roles most likely to remain fully on-site are those tied to classified government networks or secure facilities requiring a cleared presence.
How can I get hired as a senior devops engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate DevOps engineer role, often reached by lateral move from a systems administration, cloud support, or software quality assurance position. Large Virginia federal contractors like Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos run early-career technology development programs that accept candidates without direct DevOps experience. Earning an AWS Cloud Practitioner or Azure Fundamentals certification and building a GitHub portfolio of infrastructure-as-code projects gives candidates a measurable edge when applying to these programs.
Where can I find and apply to senior devops engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to senior devops engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly from each listing.
