Senior Environmental Consultant Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior environmental consultant in Rhode Island?
Most Rhode Island employers require a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, geology, civil engineering, or a related field, followed by several years of consulting experience. Licensure through the Rhode Island State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as a Professional Engineer, or registration as a Professional Geologist, significantly strengthens candidacy for senior roles. RIDEM site remediation experience and HAZWOPER certification are consistent expectations across Rhode Island hiring firms.
How much do senior environmental consultants make in Rhode Island?
Senior environmental consultants in Rhode Island earn a median of about $100,730 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,420 for the lowest 10% to over $139,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior environmental consultants in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island senior environmental consultant roles are posted by Amgen, AECOM, and VHB and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's concentration of federal facilities, Superfund sites, and coastal development projects keeps demand consistent among regional and national environmental consulting firms with local offices.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most senior environmental consultant jobs?
Providence, West Greenwich, and Newport account for the most senior environmental consultant openings in Rhode Island. Providence anchors the market as the state's commercial and regulatory hub, while North Kingstown and Warwick benefit from proximity to Quonset Business Park, Naval Station Newport, and the industrial corridors along Narragansett Bay that generate ongoing remediation and compliance work.
Are there remote senior environmental consultant jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, but they are rare. Senior environmental consulting involves frequent site visits, field oversight, and in-person client meetings that limit full remote arrangements. About 38% of senior environmental consultant openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to cover report writing, data review, and regulatory correspondence rather than fieldwork duties.
How can I get hired as a senior environmental consultant in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is entering as an environmental scientist or staff geologist at a Rhode Island consulting firm, such as TRC Companies or Kleinfelder, both of which hire recent graduates for field and laboratory support roles. Building experience on RIDEM-regulated brownfield projects, pursuing HAZWOPER certification, and working toward Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist registration in Rhode Island are the credentials that convert entry-level positions into a senior consultant career.
