Senior Risk Consultant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior risk consultant in Illinois?
The standard path in Illinois begins with a bachelor's degree in risk management, finance, business, or a related field, followed by several years in an analyst or associate risk role at an insurer, bank, or consulting firm. Illinois does not require a state-issued license to practice as a risk consultant, but employers strongly favor professional credentials such as the Associate in Risk Management, Certified Risk Management Professional, or Financial Risk Manager designations. Candidates who progress through roles in Chicago's dense financial services and insurance cluster tend to advance fastest.
How much do senior risk consultants make in Illinois?
Senior risk consultants in Illinois earn a median of about $104,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,260 for the lowest 10% to over $202,260 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior risk consultants in Illinois?
Employers hiring senior risk consultants in Illinois right now include CIBC, Northern Trust, and Aon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's mix of global insurance headquarters, large financial institutions, and multinational consulting offices creates consistent, year-round demand for experienced risk professionals.
Which Illinois cities have the most senior risk consultant jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Aurora have the most senior risk consultant openings in Illinois. Chicago generates the bulk of postings through its concentration of insurance holding companies, investment banks, and Big Four consulting offices, while Schaumburg and Bloomington attract openings from the suburban campuses of Zurich North America and State Farm, which run large risk and actuarial teams outside the city core.
Are there remote senior risk consultant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of senior risk consultant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based, analytical nature of most risk consulting work. Roles centered on quantitative modeling, policy development, and regulatory reporting translate most readily to remote arrangements, while positions requiring on-site client engagement or executive advisory work are more likely to require office presence.
How can I get hired as a senior risk consultant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an analyst or associate risk role at one of Illinois's large insurers or financial institutions and building toward a senior title from within. Aon, Zurich North America, and major Chicago-area banks regularly hire into rotational risk programs or associate analyst roles for candidates with relevant degrees or internship experience. Transitioning from adjacent positions such as internal auditor, compliance analyst, or financial analyst is a well-worn route, and earning the Associate in Risk Management credential early gives candidates a concrete edge in Illinois interviews.
Where can I find and apply to senior risk consultant jobs in Illinois?
