Senior Risk Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior risk consultant in California?
The path to becoming a senior risk consultant in California starts with a bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, or a related field, followed by several years in risk analysis, compliance, or consulting. California does not require a state-issued license for most risk consulting roles, but employers consistently favor candidates holding the Financial Risk Manager (FRM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), or CRISC designation. Advancing from analyst or associate-level roles within financial services, insurance, or a major consulting firm is the most common route.
How much do senior risk consultants make in California?
Senior risk consultants in California earn a median of about $129,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,610 for the lowest 10% to over $208,360 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior risk consultants in California?
Employers hiring senior risk consultants in California right now include Baker Tilly Canada, EY, and Kaiser Permanente, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's concentration of large financial institutions, global consulting practices, and regulated technology companies makes it one of the most consistent states for sustained senior risk consultant hiring year-round.
Which California cities have the most senior risk consultant jobs?
San Francisco, Pasadena, and Los Angeles have the most senior risk consultant openings in California. San Francisco leads because of its dense cluster of financial technology companies, investment firms, and major bank operations, while Los Angeles draws demand from insurance carriers, entertainment finance, and large professional services offices, and San Diego's strong biotech and defense sectors add a steady stream of operational and regulatory risk roles.
Are there remote senior risk consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Senior risk consulting is largely an analytical and advisory function that translates well to remote or hybrid arrangements. About 100% of senior risk consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting broader flexibility in the consulting and financial services sectors. Strategy, modeling, and reporting work tends to be the most remote-friendly, while on-site client engagements and regulatory examinations typically require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a senior risk consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a risk analyst or junior associate role within a California-based financial institution, insurer, or consulting firm, then building toward the senior level. Large employers such as regional banks, insurance carriers headquartered in Los Angeles, and the major consulting practices in San Francisco regularly hire from lateral roles in audit, compliance, and financial analysis. Earning the FRM or completing a GARP study program while in an entry-level position gives candidates a measurable edge in California's credential-conscious market.
Where can I find and apply to senior risk consultant jobs in California?
