Senior Environmental Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior environmental consultant in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, geology, civil engineering, or a related field, followed by several years of progressively responsible consulting experience. Many senior roles in California require or strongly prefer a Professional Geologist license issued by the California Department of Conservation's Geological Survey division, or a Professional Engineer license from the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Passing the appropriate licensing exam and accumulating supervised experience hours are the two concrete milestones to plan around.
How much do senior environmental consultants make in California?
Senior environmental consultants in California earn a median of about $106,510 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,350 for the lowest 10% to over $161,910 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior environmental consultants in California?
Employers hiring senior environmental consultants in California right now include Terracon Consultants, GEI Consultants, and Geosyntec Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of major infrastructure projects, active Superfund sites, and stringent CEQA requirements means large multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental firms maintain some of their largest U.S. offices here.
Which California cities have the most senior environmental consultant jobs?
San Diego, Carson, and Irvine account for the largest share of senior environmental consultant openings in California. Los Angeles anchors demand through its scale of infrastructure, port-related remediation, and development projects requiring CEQA review, while San Francisco draws work tied to tech-sector development and Bay Area water quality mandates, and Sacramento concentrates openings driven by state agency contracts, water resources projects, and proximity to major regulatory bodies.
Are there remote senior environmental consultant jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because site investigation, sampling, and field oversight require physical presence. About 38% of senior environmental consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a market where hybrid arrangements are more realistic than fully remote positions. The portions of the role most compatible with remote work include report writing, regulatory correspondence, data analysis, and project management coordination.
How can I get hired as a senior environmental consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or staff environmental scientist role at a mid-size to large California consulting firm while actively pursuing your Professional Geologist or Engineer license. Firms such as Tetra Tech, AECOM, and Brown and Caldwell run structured new-graduate programs in California that pair junior staff with licensed professionals on CEQA and remediation projects. Adjacent roles like environmental field technician, laboratory analyst, or GIS analyst at a California water district or public agency are also common stepping stones that build the site and regulatory experience hiring managers look for.
Where can I find and apply to senior environmental consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to senior environmental consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings. Search the listings, find the roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
