Senior Software Development Engineer Jobs in Florida: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior software development engineer in Florida?
Reaching the senior level in Florida typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering followed by several years of progressive engineering experience, often at one of Florida's defense contractors, fintech firms, or healthcare technology companies. Florida does not issue a state license for software engineers, so advancement depends on demonstrated technical scope, portfolio depth, and often a relevant cloud or platform certification from providers like AWS or Google Cloud.
How much do senior software development engineers make in Florida?
Senior software development engineers in Florida earn a median of about $130,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,050 for the lowest 10% to over $204,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior software development engineers in Florida?
Employers hiring senior software development engineers in Florida right now include Speechify, L3Harris, and Northrop Grumman, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Florida's concentration of defense contractors around Orlando and aerospace firms on the Space Coast means engineering roles here often intersect with simulation, embedded systems, and government program work alongside more traditional enterprise software positions.
Which Florida cities have the most senior software development engineer jobs?
Tampa, Melbourne, and Miami account for the largest share of senior software development engineer openings in Florida. Orlando leads because of its dense cluster of defense and simulation contractors, while Miami draws fintech and enterprise software employers, and Tampa's growing tech corridor supports both healthcare IT and professional services firms that employ large engineering organizations.
Are there remote senior software development engineer jobs in Florida?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of senior software development engineer openings tied to Florida are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally the role adapts to distributed work. Roles centered on cloud architecture, backend platform development, and product engineering tend to be the most remote-accessible, while positions at defense contractors frequently require on-site presence due to security clearance obligations.
How can I get hired as a senior software development engineer in Florida with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is starting in an associate or software engineer role at one of Florida's large employers and building toward seniority through increasing project ownership. Companies like Lockheed Martin and AdventHealth run structured early-career engineering programs in Florida, and defense contractors across the Orlando and Melbourne corridor regularly hire recent computer science graduates into development associate tracks. Contributing to open-source projects, completing cloud certifications, and building a portfolio that demonstrates end-to-end system thinking are the credentials that move candidates ahead fastest in Florida's market.
Where can I find and apply to senior software development engineer jobs in Florida?
