About Watershed
Watershed is the enterprise sustainability platform. Companies like Airbnb, Carlyle Group, FedEx, Visa, and Dr. Martens use Watershed to manage climate and ESG data, produce audit-ready metrics for voluntary and regulatory reporting including CSRD, and drive real decarbonization. We are looking for team members who love product-building, want to work hard at a mission-oriented startup, and will collaborate with us in shaping the culture of a growing team.
We have offices in San Francisco, New York, Denver, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City, and remote team members across the US and Europe. We hope that you'll be interested in joining us!
The role
Watershed is a software platform for running a world-class climate program. We measure our success in the carbon reduction achievements of our customers. We are looking for team members to join our team focused on delivering outcomes for our Financial Institution customers.
You’ll work on the team turning Watershed’s data layer into an intelligence platform: BI-grade querying, AI-powered discovery and analysis, and the schema architecture underneath it all. The goal is for customers to get answers inside Watershed—not export to Excel.
What you could work on:
Build new interactive data visualizations to help climate leads understand their company's emissions.
Build APIs to unify carbon data access for customers and other engineers.
Build tools that help financial institutions measure and report emissions across their portfolio companies.
Build tools for customers to effectively ingest and interpret business data.
You will:
Ship code to production on day one
Collaborate with product, design, climate science, and data science to build and iterate on software that helps our customers understand their climate data
You might be a fit if you:
Have 6+ years of software engineering industry experience, preferably in Node.js web development or data pipelines
Have experience building scalable software starting from user needs
Are excited to join a startup and are ready to help evolve a growing engineering team
This role will be based in our New York City office.
Must be willing to work from an office 4 days per week (except for remote roles)
Watershed has hub offices in San Francisco, New York, London, and Mexico City and satellite offices in Denver, Sydney, Paris, and Berlin. Where we have offices, employees are expected to be in office for 4 days per week. Certain jobs are open to being remote and will be specifically noted on the jobs page and in the job description if so.
What’s the interview process like?
It starts the same for every candidate: getting to know the team members through 1 to 2 conversations about Watershed, your experience, and your interests. Next steps can vary by role, but usual next steps are a skill or experience interview (e.g. a coding interview for an engineer, a portfolio review for a designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in person interview panel. We prioritize transparency and lack of surprise throughout the process.
What if I need accommodations for my interview?
At Watershed, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive recruitment process. We provide reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, mental health needs, religious observances, neurodivergence, or pregnancy-related support requirements. If you need assistance during your process, please contact your recruiter.

Senior Software Development Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior software development engineer in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license to work as a software development engineer, so the path runs through education and experience. Most candidates hold a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline and build several years of hands-on engineering experience before reaching the senior level. New York employers, particularly in fintech and enterprise tech, place weight on demonstrated system design ability, contributions to production-scale codebases, and a portfolio of shipped products.
How much do senior software development engineers make in New York?
Senior software development engineers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior software development engineers in New York?
Employers hiring senior software development engineers in New York right now include Google, Amazon, and Speechify, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial services firms, media companies, and enterprise technology organizations means the hiring pool extends well beyond pure-play tech to include large institutions with substantial in-house engineering teams.
Which New York cities have the most senior software development engineer jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Albany have the most senior software development engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates because it is home to the headquarters of major financial institutions, global media companies, and the largest concentration of venture-backed startups in the state, while Albany and Buffalo draw engineering talent through government technology initiatives and regional university partnerships with employers anchored in those metros.
Are there remote senior software development engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. Software development is among the most remote-compatible disciplines in the labor market, and that holds true for senior-level roles. About 71% of senior software development engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how widely New York employers have adopted flexible arrangements for engineering positions. Backend, platform, and infrastructure roles tend to be the most fully remote, while roles requiring close collaboration with hardware or on-site teams lean hybrid.
How can I get hired as a senior software development engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through associate or junior software engineer roles at large New York employers that run structured new-graduate programs, including JPMorgan Chase's Software Engineer Program, Google's engineering residency, and IBM's early professional hiring in the New York metro. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as QA engineer, data analyst, or IT systems administrator can make a lateral move by building a portfolio of personal or open-source projects and earning a cloud certification from AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure to signal production readiness to New York hiring teams.
Where can I find and apply to senior software development engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to senior software development engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to the ones that match.
