Senior Systems Administrator Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior systems administrator in Tennessee?
Most Tennessee employers expect a bachelor's degree in information technology or computer science alongside several years of progressively responsible systems administration experience. Tennessee does not require a state-issued license for this role, so hiring decisions center on certifications like CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, or VMware certifications paired with a demonstrable history of managing enterprise infrastructure in industries like healthcare, government, or logistics.
How much do senior systems administrators make in Tennessee?
Senior systems administrators in Tennessee earn a median of about $88,100 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,530 for the lowest 10% to over $128,920 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior systems administrators in Tennessee?
Employers hiring senior systems administrators in Tennessee right now include NIC Global, Rough Country, and BAE Systems USA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tennessee's large healthcare, logistics, and state government sectors mean demand is distributed across both corporate headquarters and major regional operations throughout the state.
Which Tennessee cities have the most senior systems administrator jobs?
Ethridge, Gallatin, and Dyersburg account for the most senior systems administrator openings in Tennessee. Nashville dominates because of its dense concentration of healthcare headquarters, financial services firms, and state government agencies, while Memphis draws demand from major logistics and distribution operations, and Knoxville reflects hiring tied to the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and regional utility and energy organizations.
Are there remote senior systems administrator jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, and more than many IT roles, though hands-on infrastructure tasks still require on-site presence. About 0% of senior systems administrator openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much cloud management, monitoring, and configuration work can be done off-site. Roles focused on cloud administration, scripting, and systems monitoring tend to offer the most location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a senior systems administrator in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a help desk technician or junior systems administrator and building toward the senior level over time. Large Tennessee employers like HCA Healthcare and state government agencies regularly hire entry-level IT support staff who can grow into infrastructure roles. Earning CompTIA A+, Network+, or a Microsoft associate-level certification while working in a support role gives candidates a concrete edge when competing for administrator openings.
