Tennessee does not issue a state license for it managers, but employers consistently expect certifications such as CompTIA Security+, ITIL Foundation, or PMP. Progressing through roles like systems administrator, network analyst, or IT team lead at Tennessee organizations in healthcare, logistics, or government gives candidates the supervisory experience most hiring managers require.
How much do IT managers make in Tennessee?
IT managers in Tennessee earn a median of about $158,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $98,380 for the lowest 10% to over $237,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.

Which Tennessee cities have the most it manager jobs?
Brentwood, Nashville, and Knoxville account for the most it manager openings in Tennessee. Nashville drives the largest share due to its density of corporate headquarters, major health systems, and financial services firms, while Memphis generates steady demand through its logistics and supply chain sector, and Knoxville draws from University of Tennessee affiliates, TVA operations, and a growing technology corridor in the region.

Yes, and more than many management roles, since it manager work often centers on overseeing systems, vendors, and teams that can be coordinated remotely. About 43% of it manager openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader trends in how technology departments operate. Roles focused on cybersecurity strategy, IT governance, and vendor management tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions requiring hands-on data center or facilities oversight remain largely on-site.

The most realistic entry point is moving into an IT team lead or senior technician role at a large Tennessee employer and building supervisory experience from there. HCA Healthcare and Tennessee state government agencies regularly hire IT support analysts and systems specialists who can grow into management over time. Earning an ITIL Foundation or CompTIA Project+ certification signals readiness for leadership.
