IT Manager Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a it manager in Massachusetts?
The path to becoming an it manager in Massachusetts typically starts with a bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a closely related field, followed by several years of hands-on technical work in networking, systems administration, or a related area. Massachusetts employers consistently look for candidates who have grown into supervisory or lead roles before stepping into formal management. No state-issued license is required, but certifications like CompTIA Security+, ITIL Foundation, or the Project Management Professional credential strengthen your candidacy significantly in the Massachusetts market.
How much do IT managers make in Massachusetts?
IT managers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $214,960 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $134,390 for the lowest 10% to over $308,250 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it managers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring it managers in Massachusetts right now include Beth Israel Lahey Health, MKS, and BJ's Wholesale Club, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of research hospitals, financial institutions, and defense contractors means hiring activity is spread across both large anchor employers and mid-size technology firms in the Greater Boston corridor.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most it manager jobs?
The cities with the most it manager openings in Massachusetts are Boston, Cambridge, and Marlborough. The distribution reflects Greater Boston's dominance as a technology, healthcare, and financial services hub, while suburban markets like Burlington and Waltham draw demand from major corporate campuses and defense contractors that have maintained long-term presences along Route 128.
Are there remote it manager jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, though the role is more hybrid than fully remote for most positions. About 74% of it manager openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the hands-on infrastructure and team oversight responsibilities that typically require some on-site presence. Strategic and project-focused aspects of the role, such as vendor management, budget planning, and policy development, are the functions most commonly handled remotely.
How can I get hired as a it manager in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a team lead or senior systems administrator role first, then building toward management. Massachusetts employers in healthcare and financial services, including large hospital networks and regional banks, regularly hire candidates into IT support lead or infrastructure analyst positions that serve as direct stepping stones. Completing an ITIL Foundation certification or a PMP preparatory course while in a technical role signals management readiness. Targeting mid-size Boston-area technology firms or Massachusetts state agency IT departments can also provide earlier access to supervisory responsibilities than large enterprise employers typically offer.
Where can I find and apply to it manager jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to it manager jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings updated regularly. Search the listings to see roles that match your experience level, location preference, and specialty area, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
