Tips for Your Social Media Manager Internship Search
Apply earlier than you think necessary
Large employers open summer internship applications the preceding fall, often in September or October. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Check regularly and apply as soon as a relevant role posts rather than waiting until spring.
Build a portfolio before you send a single application
At the intern level, a portfolio of documented social media projects carries more weight than a thin work history. Put together two or three projects that show real platform execution, including the tools you used, the goals, and the results. Link directly to published content, analytics dashboards, or a written case study so recruiters can assess your work immediately.
Work your campus network alongside direct applications
Campus career fairs surface structured internship programs tied to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach and increases your chances of finding roles that never get broad visibility.
Practice the social media manager intern screen out loud
Social media manager intern interviews often involve a practical exercise, such as building a sample content calendar, auditing a brand's current presence, or pitching a short campaign concept. Practice answering out loud and walking through your reasoning, since interviewers weigh how you think through a brief as much as the final output you produce.
Target structured internship programs at larger employers
Many companies in marketing and consumer brands run formal rotational or cohort-based internship programs designed to train people new to the field. These programs recruit early, fill their classes fast, and often have defined conversion paths. Identify the ones that fit your background and apply in the first wave of their recruiting cycle.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 34% of the social media manager internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to before you start reviewing listings, then filter by location and work type so you're not sorting through roles that don't fit your situation. Applying only to roles you can actually accept keeps your effort focused.
Social Media Manager Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a social media manager internship?
Lead with coursework, personal projects, and a portfolio rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A portfolio showing real campaigns, content calendars, or analytics reports gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a social media manager internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it is consistent performance on real deliverables, open headcount on the team, and how early you signal interest in returning. Position for a return offer by treating every project seriously, without counting on an offer materializing before you have one.
When should I apply for social media manager internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking regularly and applying as soon as relevant roles post gives you the best shot at structured cohorts and rolling programs alike.
Are social media manager internships paid?
Most professional social media manager internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer discloses it. Unpaid arrangements are less common at established companies and are increasingly rare in corporate settings, though they still appear at nonprofits and very small organizations.
What should a social media manager internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three documented projects that name the platforms used, the content goals, and measurable results, with links to a portfolio, published content, or a case study write-up wherever possible. Add relevant coursework in marketing, communications, or digital media. Keep the whole resume to one page.
Are there remote social media manager internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 66% of the social media manager internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early once you've decided you can commit to that format. Filter by work type to see only those listings.
Can international students get social media manager internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
