Software Design Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software design engineer in New York?
Most employers in New York hire software design engineers with a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering. New York does not require a state-issued license for software design engineers in private industry, though engineers working on public infrastructure projects may need a Professional Engineer credential through the New York State Education Department. Building a portfolio of design projects and completing internships with New York's large enterprise, financial technology, or defense employers is the most direct path to a first role.
How much do software design engineers make in New York?
Software design engineers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software design engineers in New York?
Employers hiring software design engineers in New York right now include Colliers Engineering & Design, Popli Design, and Stantec, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial services firms, defense contractors, and media technology companies means demand is broad across industries rather than limited to traditional technology companies.
Which New York cities have the most software design engineer jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Buffalo have the most software design engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution because of its density of financial technology firms, large enterprise software teams, and media and advertising technology companies, while Albany and Buffalo draw demand from state government technology initiatives and regional manufacturing and defense employers.
Are there remote software design engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 13% of software design engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves design tools, code review, and documentation rather than physical hardware. The roles most likely to stay fully remote are those focused on application architecture, cloud systems design, and software platform development.
How can I get hired as a software design engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or associate engineer role with one of New York's large technology or defense employers, where IBM, Lockheed Martin, and Bloomberg run structured early-career programs for candidates without professional experience. Lateral entry from adjacent roles such as software quality assurance, technical support engineering, or IT systems administration is also common. A strong design portfolio, contributions to open-source projects, and completion of a relevant internship through a New York university give candidates a concrete edge over other applicants with similar academic backgrounds.
Where can I find and apply to software design engineer jobs in New York?
