Software Development Manager Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software development manager in Hawaii?
Software development management in Hawaii does not require a state-issued license, but most employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field along with several years of hands-on engineering experience before moving into people management. In Hawaii's market, candidates who have worked in federal contracting, defense IT, or state government projects tend to transition most naturally into manager roles, as those employers are among the largest technology hirers on the islands. A PMP or Scrum certification strengthens applications significantly.
Which companies hire software development managers in Hawaii?
Hawaii software development manager roles are posted by GHD, Sazerac, and Coverall and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's software development manager hiring is anchored by federal defense contractors and public institutions, which maintain large, stable engineering teams on Oahu and the neighbor islands.
Which Hawaii cities have the most software development manager jobs?
Honolulu, Hawaii, and Waipahu have the most software development manager openings in Hawaii. Honolulu drives the bulk of demand as the state's commercial and government hub, home to major federal contractors, state agencies, and the University of Hawaii system, while Maui and Hilo contribute openings tied to technology initiatives at their own campuses, county governments, and growing startup ecosystems.
Are there remote software development manager jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of software development manager openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well the strategic and coordination parts of the role translate to distributed work. Roles focused on roadmap planning, sprint oversight, and stakeholder communication are the most consistently offered in remote or hybrid formats, while positions requiring hands-on lab or on-site security clearance work tend to stay fully in-person.
How can I get hired as a software development manager in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving into a team lead or senior engineer role first, then stepping into management, and Hawaii's large employers such as Booz Allen Hamilton and the University of Hawaii IT division regularly bring on senior individual contributors who take on informal lead duties before a formal promotion. Building experience on government or defense-adjacent projects common in Hawaii gives candidates a concrete edge, and completing a PMP or Certified Scrum Master credential while still in an engineering role signals readiness to take on management responsibilities.
Where can I find and apply to software development manager jobs in Hawaii?
