Software Engineer Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer in Louisiana?
Louisiana does not require a state-issued license to work as a software engineer. Most employers look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited university such as LSU, Tulane, or the University of New Orleans. Building a portfolio of projects, earning industry certifications in cloud or security, and gaining internship experience with Louisiana technology or energy companies are the most reliable steps toward a first role.
How much do software engineers make in Louisiana?
Software engineers in Louisiana earn a median of about $102,800 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,350 for the lowest 10% to over $151,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software engineers in Louisiana?
Louisiana software engineer roles are posted by Speechify, CVS Health, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Louisiana's energy sector and federal defense contracting base mean a notable share of openings come from large industrial and government-adjacent technology employers with long-term operations in the state.
Which Louisiana cities have the most software engineer jobs?
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and New Orleans have the most software engineer openings in Louisiana. New Orleans anchors the market through its financial technology, healthcare IT, and startup ecosystem, while Baton Rouge benefits from state government IT contracts, petrochemical industry software needs, and the technology programs at LSU that feed local hiring pipelines.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 92% of software engineer openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed work. Back-end development, cloud engineering, and data platform roles tend to carry the highest share of fully remote arrangements among Louisiana postings.
How can I get hired as a software engineer in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to junior developer or associate software engineer roles at Louisiana's mid-size technology consultancies and energy companies, which regularly bring on candidates with strong portfolios even without extensive professional history. Employers like CGI Federal and Lumen Technologies run structured new-graduate and rotational programs. Completing a computer science degree or a recognized bootcamp, contributing to open-source projects, and earning an AWS Cloud Practitioner or similar entry-level certification gives Louisiana candidates a concrete edge over applicants without credentials.
