Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Business Intelligence Analyst
Verify your CIP code before applying
Pull your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code from your transcript or DSO and cross-reference it against STEM-designated fields on the DHS STEM list. Business intelligence roles most commonly align with CIP codes under computer science, information science, or statistics.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Before submitting any application, confirm the employer is actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to check current participation status. An expired or inactive enrollment disqualifies them as a STEM OPT employer.
Target employers with LCA filings in analytics roles
Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for data analyst or business intelligence titles. Consistent LCA history in these SOC codes signals an employer already understands STEM worker authorization and prevailing wage obligations.
Build your I-983 training plan around BI deliverables
Your I-983 must connect your STEM degree to concrete on-the-job learning goals. Map training objectives to specific BI outputs: dashboard development, ETL pipeline ownership, SQL query optimization, or predictive modeling projects that tie directly to your degree's coursework.
Use Migrate Mate to find BI roles at verified sponsors
Search Migrate Mate for Business Intelligence Analyst positions filtered to employers with active E-Verify enrollment and DOL filing history in analytics occupations. This cuts the research time spent manually cross-checking sponsorship eligibility for each application.
Negotiate your offer start date around OPT timing
If your initial 12-month OPT expires before your STEM extension is approved, cap-gap protection keeps you authorized through October 1 only if an H-1B visa petition was timely filed. Align your offer letter start date with your DSO's recommended filing window to avoid authorization gaps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Intelligence Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree falls under a STEM-designated CIP code and the role directly applies that field of study. Degrees in computer science, information systems, statistics, and mathematics commonly support BI analyst positions. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your specific degree program and CIP code, not the job title alone.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify at the worksite where you perform your duties. Enrollment at headquarters does not automatically cover remote or satellite locations. Confirm site-level E-Verify status before signing your offer, because working for a non-enrolled employer invalidates your STEM OPT authorization and puts your F-1 status at risk.
How do I find Business Intelligence Analyst jobs with employers who sponsor STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces Business Intelligence Analyst openings filtered to employers with E-Verify enrollment and documented DOL Labor Condition Application filings in analytics-related occupations. This lets you focus applications on companies already familiar with STEM OPT obligations rather than spending hours cross-checking each employer's sponsorship history manually.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a BI analyst position?
The I-983 training plan must identify specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree and describe how your daily work advances those goals. For a BI analyst, that means listing concrete activities like building data pipelines, developing executive dashboards, or applying statistical modeling, and explaining how each connects to your degree's curriculum. Your employer supervisor co-signs the plan and USCIS requires it on file before your extension begins.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B petition is filed while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your employer files a timely H-1B cap-subject petition before your STEM OPT expires, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year, or through October 1 if the petition is selected and approved. You must remain continuously employed by the same E-Verify-enrolled employer throughout the cap-gap period, and your EAD must still show a valid unexpired date when the petition is filed.
