Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the official STEM OPT designated degree program list maintained by ICE. Solutions engineering roles require a direct connection between your technical degree field and the job duties, so a mismatched CIP code can sink an otherwise strong application.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Before signing anything, ask your recruiter for the company's E-Verify employer ID or look up their enrollment status directly through the E-Verify employer search. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally sponsor your 24-month STEM OPT extension, regardless of how willing they are.
Draft your I-983 training plan around measurable engineering outcomes
USCIS expects your I-983 to show a clear link between your STEM degree and your day-to-day work as a solutions engineer. List specific technical skills you'll develop, such as system integration design or API architecture, and tie each one to your academic background to pass DSO review without revision requests.
Target mid-market SaaS and infrastructure companies for faster decisions
Large enterprise software companies often have established STEM OPT processes, but mid-market firms in cloud, DevOps, and data infrastructure frequently hire solutions engineers and move faster through offer and onboarding. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and active STEM OPT hiring history.
Use O*NET to match your degree field to the role
Pull the O*NET profile for Solutions Engineer or closely related SOC codes to identify the core knowledge domains the role requires. Cross-referencing those domains with your transcript gives you concrete language to use in your training plan and helps your DSO confirm the STEM nexus quickly.
Time your application filing to avoid the 90-day gap
Your DSO must submit the STEM OPT extension recommendation in SEVIS, and USCIS must receive your I-765 at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. For solutions engineering roles that take 6 to 8 weeks to close, start the employer verification and training plan process at the same time you begin interviewing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Solutions Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree carries a STEM-designated CIP code and the role requires applying that technical knowledge directly. Solutions engineering typically involves systems design, software integration, and technical architecture, which align with STEM degree fields such as computer science, information systems, and electrical engineering. Your DSO will confirm the nexus between your degree and the role when endorsing your I-983 training plan.
What E-Verify steps must my employer complete before my extension starts?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before USCIS will approve your STEM OPT extension. They also need to complete the employer portion of Form I-983, sign the training plan, and agree to report any material changes to your role or employment status to your DSO within five business days. Enrollment in E-Verify must remain active for the full 24-month extension period.
How does cap-gap protection apply if I'm a solutions engineer waiting on H-1B selection?
If your STEM OPT EAD is still valid when your H-1B visa petition is filed and the fiscal year cap lottery selects you, cap-gap automatically extends your OPT work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working in your solutions engineer role during that bridge period without interruption, as long as you remain employed with the same E-Verify-enrolled sponsor.
What should the I-983 training plan include for a solutions engineer position?
The I-983 must detail the specific STEM knowledge and skills you'll develop, how those connect to your degree field, your supervision structure, and how your employer will evaluate your progress. For solutions engineering, this typically means documenting technical competencies like cloud architecture, enterprise software deployment, or API design, along with your mentor's credentials and a schedule for performance reviews.
Where can I find Senior Solutions Engineer jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Senior Solutions Engineer listings by verified E-Verify enrollment, so you're only seeing employers who can legally sponsor your 24-month extension. That removes the awkward early-stage conversation about whether a company can hire you and lets you focus the interview process on evaluating the role itself and drafting a strong I-983 training plan from day one.
