Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Technical Solutions Engineer
Confirm your CIP code before applying
Not every STEM degree automatically qualifies. Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list before submitting your STEM OPT extension request to your DSO. Computer science, electrical engineering, and information systems codes are commonly approved for Technical Solutions Engineer roles.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your STEM OPT extension is void if your employer isn't E-Verify enrolled at the time of your start date. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name and hiring location to confirm enrollment before signing anything.
Frame your technical background around customer-facing systems experience
Technical Solutions Engineers blend engineering depth with client problem-solving. Highlight experience with APIs, cloud platforms, or enterprise software integrations in your resume. Employers filing for OPT workers in this role need your technical credentials to align with the job's complexity.
Use Migrate Mate to target employers with STEM OPT hiring history
Filter your Technical Solutions Engineer job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with documented STEM OPT and E-Verify compliance. This narrows your list to companies that have already navigated the I-983 training plan process, cutting wasted applications significantly.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable learning goals
Your employer must sign and co-develop the I-983 before your extension begins. For Technical Solutions Engineer roles, map goals to specific technical competencies like solution architecture, integration troubleshooting, or customer deployment cycles rather than vague job duties.
Start your STEM OPT extension request 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS allows you to file your I-765 extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT end date. Filing early protects your cap-gap coverage if your employer later files an H-1B visa petition, keeping your work authorization continuous through the transition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Solutions Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in a DHS-designated STEM field such as computer science, electrical engineering, computer information systems, or a related discipline. The role must also directly apply your STEM knowledge. Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list and confirm the match with your DSO before filing.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for this role?
Your I-983 must outline specific, measurable learning objectives tied to your STEM degree and the Technical Solutions Engineer position. For this role, that typically means documenting goals around systems integration, technical troubleshooting methodologies, or client solution design. Both you and your employer sign the form, and your DSO must receive it before your extension is approved. Generic job descriptions don't satisfy the requirement.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Use the E-Verify employer search tool to look up your employer by company name and worksite location. Enrollment must be active at the location where you'll work, not just at a corporate headquarters in another state. If your employer isn't enrolled, they must complete E-Verify registration before USCIS will approve your STEM OPT extension. This step can't be skipped or done retroactively.
What happens to my work authorization if my employer files an H-1B petition during my STEM OPT?
If your employer files a timely H-1B cap-subject petition before your STEM OPT expires, cap-gap protection automatically extends your OPT EAD until October 1 of that fiscal year, or until USCIS makes a final decision on the petition, whichever comes first. You don't need a new EAD during cap-gap. Confirm your petition's receipt notice date aligns with USCIS timelines to ensure continuous coverage.
Where can I find Technical Solutions Engineer jobs with STEM OPT-eligible employers?
Migrate Mate lists Technical Solutions Engineer openings filtered for employers with E-Verify enrollment and documented experience hiring STEM OPT workers. Searching there avoids the common problem of applying to companies that don't understand the I-983 process or haven't registered with E-Verify, which can cost you weeks of back-and-forth during an offer stage.
