Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Hpc Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the USCIS STEM OPT designated degree list. Computer science, computer engineering, and applied mathematics codes all support HPC roles, but computational physics or interdisciplinary programs sometimes require a DSO review.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers for their E-Verify company ID or have HR pull the enrollment status from the E-Verify employer database. National labs, defense contractors, and university research centers sometimes run separate E-Verify accounts by department, so verify the specific hiring entity.
Target employers with active HPC infrastructure budgets
HPC clusters require sustained capital investment, so focus on organizations with active NSF, DOE, or DOD computing grants. Federal contractors and research universities running dedicated high-performance computing centers are more likely to have the compliance infrastructure STEM OPT requires.
Build your I-983 training plan around HPC competencies
Your I-983 must list learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just job duties. Map parallel programming, job scheduler configuration, and performance benchmarking tasks directly to the computational skills your degree covered so USCIS can trace the academic connection.
Search Migrate Mate to filter for verified STEM OPT employers
Use Migrate Mate to find HPC Engineer roles at employers already confirmed for E-Verify enrollment. Filtering by STEM OPT compatibility upfront removes roles where you'd waste time negotiating compliance requirements the employer can't meet.
Use O*NET to align your job title with STEM criteria
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for HPC Engineer or the closest matching title to confirm the role's educational requirements classify it as a specialty occupation. A written description matching O*NET's degree requirements strengthens your I-983 and any future H-1B visa petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HPC Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM field with an eligible CIP code and your job duties require applying that technical knowledge directly. HPC Engineer roles focused on cluster architecture, parallel algorithm development, or high-performance simulation generally satisfy the STEM OPT connection requirement. Your DSO will confirm CIP code eligibility before authorizing the extension on your I-20.
What STEM degrees make you eligible for HPC Engineer STEM OPT roles?
Computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, computational science, and physics degrees commonly support HPC Engineer positions. The degree must appear on USCIS's designated degree list by CIP code. Interdisciplinary or dual-degree programs require your DSO to confirm which CIP code applies before you apply for the extension.
How does the E-Verify requirement affect HPC Engineer job searches?
Every employer hiring you on STEM OPT must be enrolled in E-Verify before your extension start date. Many HPC employers, including federal contractors and national laboratories, are already enrolled, but smaller research startups or university spinoffs sometimes are not. Verify enrollment status directly with HR during the offer stage, not after signing.
What should the I-983 training plan include for an HPC Engineer role?
Your I-983 must document specific learning goals tied to your STEM degree, a supervision plan, and how the employer will evaluate your progress. For HPC roles, include objectives around parallel programming frameworks, job scheduler administration, system performance tuning, and any domain-specific simulation work. Both you and your supervisor must sign it before your extension is authorized.
Where can I find HPC Engineer jobs that support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters HPC Engineer roles by employers confirmed for E-Verify enrollment, which removes the compliance guesswork from your search. Cap-gap protection under STEM OPT also extends your authorization through October 1 if you have a pending H-1B petition, so starting your search early on a platform built for F-1 students keeps your timeline on track.
