Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a SAP Business Analyst
Verify your CIP code before applying
SAP Business Analyst roles typically qualify under CIP codes for information systems, computer science, or industrial engineering. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before applications go out, since a mismatch can invalidate your STEM OPT extension entirely.
Search E-Verify enrollment before interviews
STEM OPT requires your employer to be E-Verify enrolled on your start date, not just willing to enroll later. Check the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm enrollment status before you invest time in an interview process.
Frame your SAP experience against the I-983 training goals
Draft your I-983 training plan around specific SAP modules and business analysis deliverables before your offer is finalized. Employers unfamiliar with STEM OPT often approve a pre-written plan faster than building one from scratch post-offer.
Target employers with active LCA filings in your SOC code
Use Migrate Mate to filter SAP Business Analyst roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications under your occupation's SOC code, giving you a concrete signal that the employer understands and has executed work authorization sponsorship before.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search data
STEM OPT itself doesn't set a wage floor, but employers filing an LCA for a future H-1B visa must pay the prevailing wage. Pull the wage level for your SOC code and location from OFLC Wage Search so you negotiate from the same baseline your employer will eventually be required to meet.
Plan your cap-gap window around the H-1B petition timeline
If you're selected in the H-1B lottery while on STEM OPT, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm with your employer that they'll file by the April 1 deadline so there's no gap between your STEM OPT end date and H-1B status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SAP Business Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, SAP Business Analyst positions qualify when your employer hires you under a STEM-designated CIP code tied to your degree, such as information systems, computer science, or a related engineering field. Your DSO confirms the match between your degree's CIP code and the role before recommending the extension to USCIS on your I-20.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for an SAP Business Analyst role?
The I-983 must describe the specific learning objectives tied to your degree field, not just your daily tasks. For an SAP Business Analyst, that means documenting which SAP modules you'll work in, how the role applies systems analysis or data modeling skills from your degree, measurable goals, and supervisor oversight. USCIS can audit these plans, so vague descriptions create compliance risk for both you and your employer.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify participation is a hard requirement for STEM OPT, not a preference. You can search the E-Verify employer database by company name to confirm enrollment before accepting an offer. If the employer doesn't appear, they must enroll before your start date. Employers who agree to enroll after you begin work cannot legally support your STEM OPT authorization from day one.
Can I switch SAP Business Analyst employers during my STEM OPT extension?
Yes, but the transition requires a new I-983 training plan signed by the new employer and a new I-20 recommendation from your DSO before you start. You have a 10-day grace period between positions, but your new employer must also be E-Verify enrolled. Use Migrate Mate to find SAP Business Analyst openings at employers already set up to support STEM OPT students.
What happens to my SAP Business Analyst job authorization if I'm selected in the H-1B lottery?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf by April 1 and you're selected, cap-gap protection automatically extends your STEM OPT work authorization through September 30 of that year, bridging any gap between your OPT end date and your H-1B start date. Your employer must file before your STEM OPT expires for cap-gap to apply, so confirm their timeline well in advance.
