Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Workday Consultant
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM OPT Designated Degree Program List. Management information systems, computer science, and information technology codes qualify, but a general business degree does not, even if your coursework was technical.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter or HR contact to confirm the company's E-Verify employer ID before you sign. Consulting firms that place Workday contractors at client sites must be your direct employer of record and enrolled in E-Verify themselves.
Build your I-983 training plan around Workday modules
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Map your Workday implementation work to technical skills from your degree, such as data modeling, systems integration, or business process automation, to satisfy DSO review.
Target employers with active H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Workday Consultant roles by employers who have filed H-1B LCAs for similar positions. This tells you which firms already understand STEM OPT timelines and are positioned to sponsor your H-1B before your 36 months expire.
Understand cap-gap protection if your OPT expires in spring
If your STEM OPT end date falls between April 1 and October 1 and your H-1B is selected in the lottery, cap-gap extends your work authorization automatically. Confirm your employer will keep you active through the gap period before accepting an offer.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Look up the Workday Consultant wage level for your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation. Your employer must pay at or above the prevailing wage for the LCA they file, so knowing the floor strengthens your negotiating position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Workday Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. Workday Consultant roles involve ERP configuration, systems integration, and data management, which align with STEM degrees in computer science, information systems, or management information systems. Confirm your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM OPT Designated Degree Program List before your DSO files the extension recommendation.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for STEM OPT employers, not just a best practice. If you're placed at a client site through a staffing or consulting firm, the firm that issues your W-2 must be enrolled, not the end client. Ask for the employer's E-Verify company ID number before you accept an offer to avoid a compliance problem after you start.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Workday Consultant position?
Your I-983 must describe the practical training objectives, how the work relates to your STEM degree, and measurable learning goals. For a Workday role, tie your deliverables to technical competencies from your degree such as business process modeling, relational database design, or systems integration. Your employer's supervisor signs the form, and your DSO must approve it before your extension begins.
How do I find Workday Consultant jobs that support STEM OPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Workday Consultant roles filtered by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and H-1B LCA filing history. Employers who have previously sponsored H-1B petitions for similar roles are generally familiar with the STEM OPT training plan requirement and the 24-month extension timeline, which makes the hiring conversation more straightforward.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery?
If your STEM OPT expires between April 1 and October 1 of the same year your H-1B petition is accepted, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization and student status until October 1. Your employer must keep you on payroll during this period. USCIS publishes cap-gap guidance each fiscal year, and your DSO can issue an updated I-20 reflecting the extension.
