Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Cloud Solutions Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to a STEM-designated field recognized by SEVP. Cloud Solutions Engineer roles typically require computer science or electrical engineering credentials, so a mismatch in CIP code can disqualify your extension request.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for the company's E-Verify employer ID number before signing anything. USCIS requires your employer to be actively enrolled in E-Verify for your STEM OPT extension to be approved, and enrollment status can lapse between hiring cycles.
Target cloud-heavy employers with multi-year project timelines
Cloud Solutions Engineer roles at employers running long-cycle infrastructure migrations or multi-year managed services contracts are more likely to support your full 24-month extension. Short-term project shops may not invest in the I-983 training plan your extension requires.
Build your I-983 training plan around cloud certifications
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Frame cloud platform certifications and architecture skill development as concrete, measurable goals your employer commits to supporting. Vague objectives are the most common reason DSOs push back on training plans.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by E-Verify status
Search Cloud Solutions Engineer positions on Migrate Mate to surface employers already verified as E-Verify enrolled. This cuts out the manual back-and-forth with recruiters and lets you focus your applications on companies that can actually sponsor your STEM OPT extension.
File your extension 90 days before your OPT end date
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Missing this window means a gap in work authorization. Submit Form I-765 and your I-983 together, and confirm your DSO has updated your I-20 before you file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cloud Solutions Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your employer is E-Verify enrolled and your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information technology, or electrical engineering. The role must also require and use your STEM degree directly. Check your degree's CIP code against SEVP's STEM Designated Degree Program List to confirm eligibility before applying for the extension.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Cloud Solutions Engineer?
Your I-983 must describe the specific technical skills and learning objectives your employer will develop during your 24-month extension, tied directly to your STEM degree. For Cloud Solutions Engineer roles this typically includes cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, and platform-specific competencies. Your employer and DSO both sign the form, and it must be updated if your role or employer changes.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the recruiter or HR contact for the company's E-Verify employer ID number and verify it through the E-Verify system. Enrollment is mandatory for STEM OPT authorization; a company that is not actively enrolled cannot legally employ you under the STEM OPT extension, even if they want to. You can also browse pre-filtered roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers confirmed as E-Verify enrolled.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my Cloud Solutions Engineer role is eliminated?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new qualifying employer, update your I-983 training plan, and have your DSO amend your I-20. If you don't secure a new E-Verify enrolled employer within that window, your STEM OPT authorization ends and you must depart the U.S. or change status.
Can my STEM OPT bridge me to an H-1B cap-gap if I'm selected in the lottery?
Yes. If you're selected in the H-1B lottery and your employer files a timely petition before your STEM OPT expires, the cap-gap provision extends your work authorization automatically through September 30 of the fiscal year the H-1B visa takes effect. Your employer must file before your OPT end date for cap-gap to apply, so coordinate the timeline carefully with HR and your DSO.
